HELLISHEIDI, Iceland (AP) -- Sometime next month, on the steaming fringes of an Icelandic volcano, an international team of scientists will begin pumping "seltzer water" into a deep hole, producing a brew that will lock away carbon dioxide forever.
Chemically disposing of CO2, the chief greenhouse gas blamed for global warming, is a kind of 21st-century alchemy that researchers and governments have hoped for to slow or halt climate change.
The American and Icelandic designers of the "CarbFix" experiment will be capitalizing on a feature of the basalt rock underpinning 90 percent of Iceland: It is a highly reactive material that will combine its calcium with a carbon dioxide solution to form limestone - permanent, harmless limestone.
The researchers caution that their upcoming 6-to-12-month test could fall short of expectations, and warn against looking for a climate "fix" from CarbFix any year soon.
In fact, one of the objectives of the project, whose main sponsors are Reykjavik's city-owned utility and U.S. and Icelandic universities, is to train young scientists for years of work to come.
A scientific overseer of CarbFix - the man, as it happens, who also is credited with coining the term "global warming" four decades ago - says the world's failure to heed those early warnings, to rein in greenhouse-gas emissions from coal, gasoline and other fossil fuels, is driving scientists to drastic approaches.

Throw in some horsesh-t and a scienceist or 2 and they may get somewhere.
There are some very large holes around the world in what used to be limestone. They're called caves.
When the limestone dissolved in water, I suspect the carbon goes back into the atmo.
Perhaps limestone isn't always permanent?
I don't what it is, but it's gonna be expensive.
Don’t regulators attempt to hold ROI (return on investment) fixed, not profit margins? I knew a guy who, in a previous life, had been an FCC regulator who worked the AT&T account. He admits that they were never sure what a rotary dial handset cost Western Electric, so they could never be sure how much to allow the phone company to rent it to you.
LOL! Great graphic on Gore!
(As an aside, let me just say that I find it hard to place any credibility in a story that comes from a place called Hell Is Heidi. But I would like to know more about Heidi. She must have been something.)
I've been saying this for years. Nobody seems to get it, not even on the anti-AGW side. If they did get it, it would be a centerpiece of the argument that CO2 can't possibly destroy the planet.
At the rate we are burning fossil fuels, we have hundreds or even thousands of years before we would burn the known reserves. That doesn't include the unknown reserves that are undoubtedly out there in the vast planet, some/most being under the seas.
So our CO2 add back to the atmosphere is exceedingly slow compared to the quantity of carbon available in the fossil fuel inventory. And by the time we would have depleted the fossil fuels that currently exist, more would have been formed by natural processes on the global scale of the carbon cycle.
There is nothing to worry about...use fossil fuels and forget this ridiculous carbon sequestering nonsense. It is a cost for nothing and as you point out, it converts carbon to a form that is a dead-end of the carbon cycle if it is successful.
They like to say we are using the natural resources unfairly, depriving future generations. Well, killing the carbon cycle IS depriving future generations.
AGW PING
So when the earth starts to die due to lack of co2 then what? You know my theory on the hole in the ozone layer has always been it is the earths way of letting out uneeded chemicals. Granted I am no scientist but I have stayed in a holiday express before.
>>the “CarbFix” experiment will be capitalizing
But wait -— Isn’t this process much like that by which Comrade Al Gore intended to “fix” many deneros in his bank account ala his carbon-trading enterprise?

Yep. Thought so.
Excellent point.
Guess they are counting on other layers of rock to do the dirty work.
