“Obama returned home one night early on Friday from his island vacation on Martha’s Vineyard off Massachusetts and appeared keen to be visibly in charge as the response to Hurricane Irene unfolds.”
Obama is always keen to appear to be in charge of things. “Leading from behind” simply means staying in the background while all the serious decisions are made and then racing to the head of the parade to announce “Mission accomplished.”
I’m sure he’s bitterly disappointed that Irene turned out to be a Category 1 pipsqueak instead of a Category 4 catastrophe that would have swept all the bad news about the economy off the front pages.
