David Brooks advice to Perry opponents: Make him seem corrupt

One thing’s for certain — Texas Gov. Rick Perry has made an impressive charge in the polls since he announced his candidacy for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination early this month. So how does a guy like Mitt Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts, take him on?

In an appearance on Friday’s “NewsHour” on PBS, New York Times columnist David Brooks explained that Romney will have to “do something aggressive” to remain formidable.

“He has only been in the race a couple of weeks but the polls moved to a degree that is almost unprecedented. He has catapulted and catapulted along all wings of the party. He is the guy they were waiting for — somebody who has a harder edge. Somebody who has very strong conservative credentials but who has been elected, run a major state, and I think Mitt Romney has to be thinking ‘I’m an outsider now. I’m behind and I have to do something aggressive to try to get back.’”

Perry will withstand Romney's onslaught. Between the two, Perry is the authentic conservative.

If Romney wants to do something that will help his campaign, he's going to need a few things. Off the top of my head, I'm going to say at least three.

An investigative report by the Dallas Morning News showed that Rick Perry coordinated with two business partners to flip land he purchased and sold in order to profit more than $500,000.

Perry covered-up this scandal by refusing to release the public listing agreement, attempting to hide the identity of the land buyer and hiding the fact that the buyer was a business partner with the original seller.

In about a week or two , Romney will have to unleash the attack machine on Perry to stop his bleed in the polls. When people find out about the real Rick , his bubble will pop. If he survives it , he will be damaged goods and Team Obama is ready to finish him off. Team Obama , while publicly hinting they are afraid of Perry , actually consider him the best christmas gift they could ever get.

Perry appointed friends and donors to the Teacher Retirement System Board who steered hundreds of millions of teacher dollars - and millions in fees - to firms run by Perry donors.

In 2000, when Perry took office, the TRS had more assets than it needed to fund retiree benefits for more than 30 years.

But by 2010, the TRS has an unfunded liability of $21.6 billion.

In 2007, Texans learned of of a massive sex abuse scandal at the Texas Youth Commission.

When news of the scandal broke, Governor Rick Perry claimed he knew nothing about the abuse until he saw it in the paper. That was a lie.

In fact, Governor Perry and his office were informed of a stalled investigation into the abuse as early as February 2005, two years before news reports first came out.

What will Perry cover up as President?
