It was a Scottish policeman. He died a natural death, I believe, and was buried in Greyfriars. Bobby followed him to his grave and would not leave - despite efforts of the locals. Eventually, they came to admire his loyalty and he lived in the cemetery during the day, took a lunch break (I'm not kidding!) and then retired at night to his adopted friends - while the graveyard was locked up.

Edinburgh gave him a collar making him (I think) a citizen of the city. He went to all the parades and became a celebrity. He may have been on the cranky side and growled at people visiting their deceased loved ones. He kept all the cats and rats out of the place.

Bobby is not buried in consecrated ground. He is buried near his master close to the kirk. I've visited it.

Thank you dear. It’s been a while since I’ve heard the story but it always choked me up. Growing up among all the “Scotties’’ in Kearny NJ you learn a lot about the Scots, aye lassie.
