Because back then, armies would show up and take whatever they "needed." They'd clean you out of your food, your crops, etc. Potatos grow underground, and were not widely known. Word spread through the grapevine, and people planted their own stashes of potatos so they'd have hidden food that the armies wouldn't find and steal.
Gold is pretty worthless without a security structure. They used to carve (or chisel) dubloons into quarters and pieces of eight for smaller purchases.
“If you have guns you can get gold”
You can’t eat it, though.
Consumer confidence? We don’t need no stinkin’ consumer confidence! Have a bowl of gold flakes. Enjoy the ride to collapse, repudiation and rebuilding. ;-)
The population of Europe exploded with the introduction of the potato.
Note what happened in Ireland when it was removed...the Irish famine... about 1.5 million starved to death.
There are 2,000 varities of potatoes still in Peru. If the Irish had chosen two or three others to grow there is a good chance they would have had one that was immune to to the fungus that killed their potato crops.
When the global SHTF, where will the safe haven be and what if there’s no way to get there, or get something from there?
Bring me your gold...I will give you food. (See how that works)
lead gets gold. ;)
I think it was Frederick the Great who became a champion of the potato and promoted it to his people. I found the history incredibly fascinating, how the humble spud changed the course of history.
The blogger from Argentina, and i believe he’s posted here in the past, said to get gold necklaces - they’re portable and easy to deal with.
Very very interesting.
Do you know how one can safely keep ‘taters in the ground without rotting or “going bad” ?
If you’re starving, what is worth more—food or gold? Gold won’t save you from inflation in that scenario, because if you want to buy some of my, say, potatos, I’m going to charge you quite a bit of yellow metal. Hell, I might just turn you down and find someone trading something I actually need, like goods and services, or usable commodities. Shiny metal won’t cut it.
Definitely have to have a secured exchange. Or go the way of the Incas, Aztecs and Mayas...
That's why you should be making plans now.
(The mother of Texas would know that...I bet Dr Long would have known, eh?)
I used to visit a plaque at a place named Long Acres just outside Richmond (on the Brazos River) that stated that the location was once the home of Jane and Dr Long.
I don’t know how they hid/stored them once they were grown. I think the idea was they were hidden crops. But I don’t know what they did with them once they were grown. Maybe they can be stored in holes in the ground?
Great video in a great thread. Thanks to all.
Life, liberty and the pursuit and destruction of totalitarians.
It is fascinating.
Might get you past a check point, not much else!
Please don’t buy gold from Goldline - they WAY overcharge.
Try APMEX.com or Peter Schiff’s EuroPacific precious metals firm for much more reasonable price premiums over spot price. Shop for price!
Lots of plans have been made by the good doc and myself...but you didn’t answer my questions ;)
I think I read in a book that some used to dig out an area, or use wooden boxes and layer the potatoes with straw- and that is how root crops used to be stored in root cellars- my grandmother did that. If you have a root celler you can keep potatoes, onions, squash, carrots, etc. for a very long time.
