I have two rescues. One from a no kill shelter and one from the dog pound. The one from the dog pound was on death row.
I am for mandatory spay and neuter to own a dog or cat with strict enforcement. I know I have been flamed for suggesting this, but I can’t stand the thought of so many of our wonderful friends being killed every day. There should be licenses to breed and stiffer penalaties for animal abuse.
As a staunch conservative, this is one area where I believe in stricter government—to protect those that can’t protect themselves. I feel the same way about the abuse of innocent children and the unborn.
Delicate subject to be sure. We owned two papered Cocker Spaniels, male and female. They bred themselves without our being aware the first time (we were actually quite ignorant as to when the male became, shall we say, mature). We were pretty fortunate as the first litter was only 2 pups so it wasn’t hard finding homes. We bred them 2x after and then had them “fixed”.
The 2x we bred them, we had prospective owners lined up beforehand as they had seen our dogs and expressed interest in any pups.
The timing was good for us as well since we were trying to make it living off base, on the local economy. As a jr. NCO with a new son and wife not working, the extra money really helped out.
Granted, there are way too many fly by night breeders out there that are abusive. But I’m not sure I agree in total about complete and mandatory spay and neuter to own a pet.
As to the abuse, I agree that it’s abhorrent and that animals need some form of protection from it. I guess the question is, how does one define the “severity” of the abuse with regards to the punishment to be meted out for the abuse in question?
Anyhow, I don’t want to go off the rails too much and hijack the thread.
You’ll get no arguments from me.
Just the other day I saw a beautiful basset on the side of the road. Someone else stopped, I’ve been praying that they took him home with them.
I’ve been shot at, almost been stabbed, but seeing a dog dead in the road, or on the side of the road...it just about kills me.
