Landlines and cells disrupted, that’s kind of weird, no? And shutting down any airports...never mind the big ones. How can they do that for a 5.8 quake?

Probably due to sudden spike in attempted calls more than anything.
Use SMS text - less issue with high volume congestion on channels.
