Whats Lloyd Blankfein afraid of?
You can pick any number of things that could have caused the chairman and CEO of Goldman Sachs to go out and hire an expensive criminal defense attorney, but his most pressing concern has to be a guy named Rajat Gupta.
Gupta was a friend of Raj Rajaratnam, the founder of Galleon Group who is going to jail for insider trading.
Gupta was also an esteemed member of Goldmans board of directors and would have been aware of anything important that was occurring at Goldman Sachs.
Phone conversations with Gupta that came up during Rajs trial should have landed Gupta in a lot of trouble. The calls were enough to help convict Rajaratnam.
But Gupta has never been charged with criminal wrongdoing, which would lead any reasonable person to assume hes cooperating with prosecutors on something.
What could that something be?
A lot of people think its Goldmans selling of mortgage securities that it knew were less valuable than it was telling clients.
But thats not the sort of thing that would have necessarily come up at a board meeting attended by Gupta.
And Goldman and Blankfein probably wouldnt have broken ranks over something like this -- as hiring a private attorney implies.
My money is still on insider-trading charges.

Too bad for him that he isn’t one of Holder’s people.
This will be fun to watch. Will it go all the way back to barney frank and chris dodd where all this started?
The media are going to mostly ignore this as they are ignoring the gun running scandal.
If big media doesn’t cover it...it must not be news.
Frank and Dodd should be facing a federal grand jury.
I’ll never forget (or forgive) Blankfein for saying “ we are doing the Lord’s work “
PUKEMAO!
The CEO of goldman hired an expensive defense attorney. Means he either has a lot to lose or he wants to make sure he isn’t the patsy in all this. If his attorney is worth his pay, he will dig up all the dirt on this issue.
The media will take sides and probably target the defense for destruction. But if the case goes before an honest judge (fingers crossed), the laws will be upheld.
I hope to see barney suddenly announce his resignation. Then we will know something’s up.
The obvious answer is becaused he’s a crook.
Blankfein said, we are doing the Lords work
That IS the pukiest.........
