Police say a 24-year-old man walked into an Algonquin grocery store about noon Sunday and threw a Molotov cocktail into a crowd of people, injuring one man.
A 40-year-old Crystal Lake man shopping at Joe Caputo & Sons Fruit Market, 100 S. Randall Road, chased suspect Fabian J. Torres out of the store and, with the help of an off-duty Carpentersville police officer, subdued him until police arrived, according to authorities.
I was just at Caputos, it was surreal, said Thom Petrowski, who was with his wife and 5-year-old son. Im standing in the deli department and I looked up and saw a flame going over my head.
Torres pulled up to the store about 12:15 p.m. Sunday, sprinted down an aisle at the market and threw the homemade device into a crowded area near the deli department, said Algonquin Deputy Police Chief Ed Urban.
It landed literally four feet behind me and I saw the flames go up a guys leg and shorts, Petrowski said. I just chased him out of Caputos into the parking lot and when he knew I was right on him, he took off.
Torres, who lives in Sleepy Hollow, was charged with aggravated arson, which carries a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison, Urban said.
The bottle did break open and the fire spread, Urban said. One person was slightly burned on the legs, and treated and released at the scene.
Police cordoned off a large area of the parking lot while searching the red Kia that Torres arrived in to ensure there were no other devices.
At this time, we think he was acting alone, Urban said. We didnt find another incendiary device, that was our initial concern.
Petrowski said there were about 30 people standing near the deli counter when the bottle was thrown.
I told my wife, three seconds earlier I would have been in that spot, he said. He was aiming for the crowded spot. He came in a full sprint running down the aisle, lit it and threw it.
Petrowski said when police showed up, Torres still had a lighter in his hand.
Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms assisted police at the scene.
We are trying to confirm the motive right now, Urban said. We are going to be meeting tomorrow with the (McHenry County) states attorneys office to see if there will be more charges.
Police said there was some damage to the store, but nothing significant that would force it to close.
Torres, who was expected to be transferred to the McHenry County jail, is scheduled to appear in court Monday for a bond hearing.
How soon before the Lamestream tries to claim Tea Party involvement?
Let me be the first to claim it is Maxine Waters fault due to her violent rhetoric. (”The tea party can go to hell.”)/s
The author of the Daily Herald article seems to be surprisingly incurious as to motive.
Aren't they all?
This apparently happened in Algonquin, Illinois, which is about 40 miles Northwest of Chicago.
There is nothing other than this story on the Internet about Fabian J. Torres. This suggests he is either an illegal alien or long homeless, possibly mentally ill.
The motive cannot be assigned until the voter registration records of the perpetrator have been obtained.
If he is a Democrat, the motive will be frustration and rage at having lost his job and concern over the shredding of the social safety net.
If he is a Republican, the motive will be incendiary rhetoric, particularly by Sarah Palin and/or the Tea Party, and general animus toward the government.
Ruh-oh.
From http://algonquin.patch.com/articles/man-throws-fire-bomb-inside-caputos
...Petrouski said he asked the man why he would do that, and the man told him it was because he was Native American and people ruined his land.
I can tell you that Sleepy Hollow, where this guy supposedly lives, is a very nice area.
They probably already have
Fabian just couldn’t stand being called “Fabian” any longer.
Goodness. I just looked at Algonquin on google maps- when I was growing up there it was nothing but cornfield O_O
How long before a lawyer for the Fabian the Bomber files a lawsuit against the "40-year-old Crystal Lake man" for unlawful detainment, racial discrimination, hate crime or some such foolishness?
And what are the odds that he will win a large financial judgement?
Have any section 8 housing?
Back in our fathers time Section 8 had a different meaning. Perhaps Mr. Torres bridged the past with the present.
Just guessing.
Normally it would be about 1.5 seconds after it happened.
Later they would investigate the facts. If it turned out that he was a TEA Party member, Christian, Republican, A Patriot, or a person who owns an American flag it would be broadcast over and over for days.
If it was a Democrat, Communist, LaRaza member or someone on the Left, it would still be broadcast, but not as often, and the media would still claim that it was a TEA Party member.
...What, no Washington Irving related jokes yet???
You'd be hard-pressed to find anyone more ignorant and out of touch than Maxine Waters.
It seems odd that a Communist like her would call for the largely Christian TEA Party to go to Hell. I didn't think that atheists believed in Hell.....
Couple things JOAT.
many Tea party folks are former military. Honest, we know how to make and throw molotov cock tails better than this weenie did.
“threw a Molotov cocktail into a crowd of people, injuring one man”?
What he did is horrible,
But it is a good thing this clown was an obammy voter.
