On the other hand, he can use this as a talking point about the EPA, overregulation, red tape blocking construction jobs.
Rich man building home = J-O-B-S.
Rich man building home on CA Coast = Regulatory nightmare.
For perhaps the wealthiest candidate in the 2012 race, what better way to deflect attacks on that wealth? You can show over regulation = killed jobs.
If I had that kind of money I would do the same thing in the same place. He has 5 sons and a lot of grandchildren so why not.
Many years ago I did some work at Joan Kroc’s house (the owner of McDonalds) in La Jolla.
Her house was maybe 3500 square feet. It was no big deal.
She may have been a worth 20 times what Romney is worth, but her house was not that big.
Ok, it had a great view and a couple of hundred million dollars worth of paintings inside, but the home itself was modest.
Probably a dumb decision at this time. He should let Obama get all the “vacationing in a rich man location” heat, a glimpse of Obama’s narcissism and insensitivity to the unemployed.
Instead, he will enable the media to make rich republicans the target of exactly what they’re not calling Obama out on.
The guy is a flip-flopping, ethical disaster, and now he’s added “dumb” and “tone deaf” to his list of credentials.
Does he keep his money in his house?
He is probably anticipating that this will be the Western White House.
I cruise down to La Jolla all the time. It is the only city south of LA Central that still has a whole bunch of cars with leftover Obama Bumper stickers. I don't get it, but for some reason filthy rich people who drive Priuses think they can impress the world by showing their support for Obama.
BTW LaJolla is the home of the most demonic looking Mormon Temple in the world. It looks like something out of an HP Lovecraft nightmare.
The Temple of Kolob
Romney has a great chance of winning if he comes up against Obama. And he has a great chance of winning the pubbie primary with all the conservatives knocking each other and dividing the vote. Top that with so many crucial states permitting cross-over voting, and you know that Romney think he has it in the bag.
The cross-over thing means he’s not entirely wrong. There’s no need for them to vote in the democrat primary. No one will run against Obama.
This is a family website, bud.
And I know they claim everything's bigger in Texas, but I still call BS.
so why not.
Cause he’s running for president and 80% of the voters will roll their eyes and shake their heads when they hear it.
If you want to run for President you need to expect to make some sacrifices. I wouldn’t call living in an ocean front La Jolla home that’s “only” 3000 square feet an unreasonable sacrifice for someone in his position.
From the picture some posted here it would be impossible to make that house secure enough to be the Western White House.
LaJolla is the home of the most demonic looking Mormon Temple in the world.
[Hes a wealthy politician who has bought land and wants to build a house. So what?]
jim dandy, so you can go vote for him. If he is the nominee, I will stay home and many conservatives will also. Deal with it.
Is FR into class warfare like DU now?
Somebody’s building a Western White House.
It was only 113 percent, not 113 HUNDRED percent
“Romney is a principal in an investment firm. He makes money the old-fashioned way—use OPM and take the profits.”
I like your concise summary! He’s a money changer.
Mitt Romney, ... is also working on plans to nearly quadruple the size of his $12 million oceanfront manse in La Jolla. ... Romney has filed an application with the city to bulldoze his 3,009-square-foot, single-story home ... and replace it with a two-story, 11,062-square-foot structure.
$12,000,000 for a 3,009 SF House? That's $3,988.00/SF !! It doesn't cost that much to build a 'sky scrapper' (Hi-Rise) on Chicago's 'Magnificent Mile', aka Michigan Avenue. Or anywhere on or near Chicago's "Gold Coast" (where Old Money rich families live).
So what will Mitten's new house be 'worth'? If $3,988/sf is the 'rule of thumb', then a new 11,000 sf house would be $43,868,000! That can't be right. It just can't be. It's insane. But if true it's no wonder people are fleeing Kalifornia in droves.
And 11,000 sf isn't 'that big' of a 'Mansion'. There's many in a certain Chicago Western suburb that are 14,000 sf and larger. And those 'cost' about $1,000 per sf tops, to buy one. But you better have a lot of loose change for the 'upkeep'. The property taxes alone are about $46,000 a year. (or 'were' a couple years ago)
