Perry sounds off on immigration, war By: Molly Ball August 20, 2011 04:14 PM EDT
ROCK HILL, S.C. Taking questions from reporters for the first time since Monday as he wrapped up a campaign swing here, Texas Gov. Rick Perry defended and expanded on his record on immigration policy a record with positions that some of the Republican base rejects.
As governor, Perrys supported allowing illegal immigrants to get in-state tuition rates at Texas universities and opposed Arizonas strict state immigration law despite signing a law in Texas that critics call similarly repressive.
Heres what you need to understand about me, is Im a big believer in the 10th Amendment, Perry said. States are the ones that should decide how they set university tuition rates and how they enforce immigration laws, he said.
I didnt think that the state of Texas, an Arizona-exact law was right for the state of Texas, he said. I didnt want to make our law enforcement officers federal immigration officers. So state-by-state ought to be the way to do that, not by the federal government, one-size-fits-all.
But Perry called for federal involvement on the issue when a reporter pointed out that the Constitution assigns the federal government responsibility for immigration.
I’m for him, but we need a sound congressman as his vp.
Paul Ryan would fit the bill.
ping
my tagline
I don't think we need to refight the Civil War but Ricardo here has his priorities inverted when it comes to patriotism.
We do not lack in having candidates who are, on the other hand, very patriotic.
Pardon me, but could it be that Perry is pandering to the Chicano vote in Texas?
we need ryan’s knowledge of the budget at work in the house.
biden proves that a village idiot can be vp.
Just curious.
Amen to that!
Perry’s views on immigration are dangerous. He should be rejected for those alone.
Considering his support of bi national health care for poor “border dwellers” what would be the difference?
40% of the 12 to 20 million illegal aliens present in this country came here legally and overstayed their visas. Securing the border only solves part of the problem.
Did he say this after he gave illegals in-state tuition breaks or after?
It's the "PRIMARY" season.
Time to sort out who "SHOULD" be our leader!
Perry "SHOULD NOT" be our leader!
Unfortunately for the Unites States of America, in 1992 and again in 1996 we had a lot of knot-heads who voted for Perot, stupidly believing that somehow he could get a majority of Americans to vote for him. It didn’t work then and such a strategy won’t work now. I and my family don’t want to see another day of Zerobama beyond inauguration day 2012.
There are those who are still trying to mold the Republican party as they would like it. Under normal circumstances I see nothing wrong with this. Staying home and punishing your party in protest works.
Obama's has proven that 2008 was NOT the year to be doing that as much as I dislike McCain.
To vote for Obama because a RINO is running against him would not be punishing the party in 2012, it would be destroying the nation and destroying our political system as we know it.
We must be careful we do not throw out the baby (our political system) with the bath water (RINO)
Bush2 again confirms his support of amnesty for illegals!
