Too bad that not everyone can witness the Haj at Jeddah Airport. Fustercluck! Moslems from all over the world come in for it, and they are all funneled through King Abdul Aziz Int’l. The rich folks do all right; they’re whisked through all the formalites. But these poor folks from Mali or Bangla Desh arrive with little more than the shirts on their backs. Before and after, they camp out on the grounds of the airport. While they’re in Jeddah, they buy everything they can get their hands on. TVs and electric fans are big sellers. People sleep on their soft baggage awaiting their charter flights. When I was there - and I don’t suppose it’s improved any - the authorities had to separate the Iranians from the Nigerians because of some long-standing animosity. They put the gentler Malaysians in between the two.
