GOP presidential hopeful Michele Bachmann said today that Americans "fear the rise of the Soviet Union" during an appearance on a conservative radio talk show.
The Soviet Union broke up into 15 separate republics 20 years ago. Boris Yeltsin was the first freely elected leader of Russia, the largest of those republics.
"What people recognize is that there's a fear that the United States is in an unstoppable decline. They see the rise of China, the rise of India, the rise of the Soviet Union and our loss militarily going forward," Bachmann said on Jay Sekulow's radio show.
Bachmann, a Minnesota congresswoman, was trying to explain that Americans are concerned about issues beyond federal spending and the debt.

She didn't say it, but I took it that she meant that.
I'm afraid this reflects her husband, Marcus.
Putin said back in 2005 that the breakup of the USSR was the 20th Century's "greatest geopolitical catastrophe". So yes, it is entirely possible, especially since Putin's actions have been to restore this union, albeit in a non-communist (but very likely fascist) form.
Id like to think she meant the return of the Soviet Union, which is entirely possible
Huh?
Bachmann really IS an idiot.
We don't need the leftist media to clue us in on that, do we?
Hey! Bachmann fans! Let's argue the point, shall we?
havung grown up in the cold war, she and i saw the soviet union as a threat, especially looking into east grermany from a border camp near the fulda gap. folks used russia and soviet union interchangeably and i still have to catch myself referring to a ww2 russian (NO IT’S SOVIET) tank.
reading a new book on the crimean war (1854) and there was the same global fear of russian dominatiuon in turkey and the balkans in the 1800s. the rhetoric is very similar.
When Sarah gets in, all the crap we have been seeing from almost every candidate running so far will be reduced to a bad memory. Going to be some very sour grapes afterwards.
perry is a misogynist and bachmann is losing it already. When the heat is on, what are they gonna do then?
“I can see the Soviet Union from my house.”
You're full of sh!t.
Palin was always a star on FR.
God, Jesus Christ and Michele Bachmann ... in that order.
Anyone old enough to remember the Cold War and the Soviet Union is likely to make that gaffe. Back in those days, Russia and the Soviet Union were interchangeable terms. Sometimes it’s hard to break old habits.
She is member of Congress intelligence committee. God knows what else she is learning from intelligence briefing.
May be effect of bad light inside radio station or wrong migraine medicine or Titanium spine side effect.
Too bad. I like her. And she is great when focused entirely on today’s issues. But she’s a gaffe-making machine. It never stops with her. Stick a fork in her.
That was my assumption when reading the headline. I don't dare read the story. You mean she may not have been referring to the "Soviet Union" in that sense?
>Id like to think she meant the return of the Soviet Union, which is entirely possible.....but who knows.<
It’s entirely possible. Since Obama was elected, the US has been throwing its longtime allies under the bus. There are people who would love nothing more than to reunite the USSR. There is less reason to think the US would do anything to stop that reunification; particularly if this country has an economic meltdown.
I agree BUT not a candidate for President of the United States or for President of any country.
Bachmann is not my candidate of choice but I'm going to give her the benefit of the doubt that she really meant a return of the Soviet Union.
You cant blame Rollins if the words are coming out of her mouth. Even if he told her to say “Soviet Union,” she should know better. Its the same with Waterloo. If you grew up somewhere and a famous person was from that town, it would be so ingrained that you couldnt “accidently” say the wrong thing.
I get the feeling she is doing what is called “pressing” in sports. She is trying to make too much happen now, and not playing for the rest of the game.
