FULL TITLE: Mark was so badly injured by a Taliban bomb he begged his mate to shoot him. Now he can't wait for his new baby

He may be missing three of his limbs, but Mark Ormrod considers himself a lucky man: lucky he is alive, lucky to have a loving wife who’s seven months pregnant and lucky to have the support of ‘the best extended family you could want’ — the Royal Marines.

Having met this extraordinary 27-year-old, there’s no doubt that Mark has made a fair bit of his own luck, too, since a hidden Taliban bomb left him so badly injured that he begged a friend to shoot him on the spot.

Following a Herculean rescue and rehabilitation operation stretching from the ditches of Helmand to Headley Court, Surrey, Mark was soon looking ahead, not backwards.

Here is a triple amputee whose response to a doctor’s warning that he would never walk again was to limp on to a parade ground four months after the accident (which happened on Christmas Eve 2007) in order to receive his campaign medal.

A year later, he was walking unaided up the aisle (although, as he admits, his artificial arm was nearly falling off at the time). Nearly three years on, he is about to give away his wheelchair and is now saving up for — wait for it — a motorbike.

But the former Royal Marine also counts himself lucky for another reason

It’s an awful fact that more people are surviving these wars, but they have been left with very serious and not entirely recoverable injuries.

Fixed it for you. I hope you didn't really mean that it's awful that Mark Ormrod and others are surviving. He doesn't seem to think he'd be better off dead than disabled.

Of course not. But I wish that there was some way of making them truly 100% again. I feel guilty about having good health and all four limbs after reading things like this.
