Perry calls global warming an unproven, costly theory -'manipulated data' to win research dollars
Los Angeles Times ^ | August 18, 2011 | Maeve Reston

Posted on 08/18/2011 2:58:23 AM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

…Perry expressed his skepticism about global warming….

…Jim Rubens, a Republican…..who works as a consultant for the Union of Concerned Scientists. Rubens prefaced his question by reading statements from Perry's book "Fed Up!" that global warming is "a contrived phony mess that is falling apart under its own weight."

Rubens, an investor who works in the clean-energy sector, asked Perry how he reconciled those views and his assertion that the Earth is "experiencing a cooling trend" with findings that fossil fuel combustion is the primary cause of global warming and...Earth surface temperatures have risen above the 20th century average every month since the mid-1980s.

If both "observed scientific data" and the National Academy of Sciences are wrong on the issue,….doesn't that call into question the entire science discovery process that is the basis for America's status as an advanced technological society?"

"You may have a point there," Perry quipped, adding that he believed the issue had become politicized. Without citing any specific examples, the Texas governor charged that "there are a substantial number of scientists who have manipulated data so that they will have dollars rolling into their projects."

His opinions put him at odds with the vast majority of experts. The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, made up of more than 2,500 scientists, found with 90% confidence that recent warming was caused by humans. Its conclusion is supported by years of accumulated scientific data. The U.N. has warned that there is so much carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere that even if concentrations held at current levels, the effects of global warming would continue for centuries.

Rubens said later in an interview...Perry was promulgating inaccurate information that could damage the reputation of the National Academy of Sciences……

Your posts never make any sense at all.

They make sense once you realize their whole purpose is to bash Perry.

Yes. The Left just pulls numbers out of their butts and the msm prints them unchallenged.

***People can become wiser as they grow older and more experienced. Perry seems to have gone through that process**

Well, we can’t have that - they MUST BE PERFECT from birth;)

Which means, never having to say you’re sorry;)

Or....being a know-it-all and never taking advice from anyone;)

(p.s. love your name)

and that there is no evidence that man’s activity is causing said warming.

This is the part where the argument goes into pure speculation. In order to prove that humans are contributing to climate change, one would have to to separate out all natural factors and be able to show exactly what climate change is being caused naturally and what is likely human caused. As far as I know, nobody has even come close to doing that. The entire AGW theory appears to be based on a Post Hoc Ergo Propter Hoc argument, hardly a viable standard for make scientific conclusions. And even under that weak argument, they have had to manipulate the data.

A nice appeal to authority there, doesn't mean they're right, but they have a lot of official sounding acronyms in their name. Of course if the lazy journalist would read other articles that aren't from the NY Times, then he would see just the sham that Perry speaks of and what a poor choice for authority the corrupt IPCC is.

it’s like e-mailgate never happened.

They are also ignoring the most recent numbers from NASA.

Perry and other AGW skeptics are Copernicus denying the “established” scientific consensus that the solar system orbits the earth.

A nice appeal to authority there, .....

The Left does it constantly. The field of scientific research has been badly discredited by these "environmentalists" and those whose "conclusions" are bought and paid for, while those doing good research are scorned.

Perry and other AGW skeptics are Copernicus denying the “established” scientific consensus that the solar system orbits the earth.

A good analogy is what happened to scientists in the USSR under Stalin by his pet agronomist, Tofim Lysenko (who began killing off scientists who disputed his "science").

>>>Agronomy is the application of a combination of sciences like biology, chemistry, economics, ecology, earth science, and genetics. Agronomists today are involved with many issues including producing food, creating healthier food, managing environmental impact of agriculture, and creating energy from plants.<<<

Perry’s utterly refreshing on this issue.

I love how Rubens is a ‘Republican’. Like that means anything.

Indeed.

One of the arguments I use to shut down the the eco-Nazis runs along these lines:

Me: So you say there is GW.
Them: Yes.
M: And that GW is caused by Man’s activity?
T: Yes.
M: Do you think GW is caused 100% by Man’s activity, or do you believe there may be some natural causes, such as sun cycles, atmospheric processing of moisture, wind patterns, ocean currents?
T: Well, I suppose there may be ‘some’ natural causes to GW, but it is mainly caused by Man’s activity.
M: If that’s the case, what percentage of GW would you ascribe to Man’s activity and what percentage to natural causes?
T: I don’t know.
M: Then how do you know how much of Man’s activity we need to curb in order to reverse GW if we do not know what percentage of GW is due to Man’s activity?
T: DENIER! DENIER! Here’s one of those deniers that thinks the earth is flat and who hates anyone and everyone and wants to destroy the earth and is a greedy pig who doesn’t mind killing cute little furry animals and cutting down old trees all for his selfish greed!!!! (Insert picture of red, screaming face here.)

The point being, if we acknowledge that some of the GW (if there is any) is caused by natural causes, we don’t know what percentage. And if we don’t know that, it is silly to talk about curbing activity in order to effect some unknown percentage of change we are seeking.

Nice post org.whodat and at the very least we’ve established that Perry is a founding member of the ‘political class’.

Still he’s better than Obama and I don’t think it likely that we’ll get a candidate who isn’t part of the political class. Even Reagan was part of the political class, however far outside mainstream Republicans of the 70s.

I love that Gov. Perry is speaking out on this. That said, I still need to hear (from him) his current stance on the blatant, criminal, and often hostile foreign invasion that is being tolerated along the US/Mexico border.

If the Texas Governor, of all people, doesn't think we need to act swiftly on this, we are DOOMED. This is America's #1 problem right now, and it's not that hard to fix. The cancer is spreading fast though, and our leaders are FAILING us.

I believe the Stalin era state sponsored socialism promoting ersatz science was known as “Shadow Science.”

Star Treks Chekov was a big fan of Russian “Shadow Science” in that anything important (like quadro triticalie) was a Russian invention.
