MGM Resorts International today said it’s recommending to Clark County that the quarter-billion-dollar Harmon Hotel at CityCenter on the Las Vegas Strip be demolished because of construction defects.
MGM Resorts said it is seeking Clark County Building Department approval to raze the empty, unused building. With that approval, MGM would then seek court approval for demolition.
An initial proposed timetable calls for the demolition to be accomplished in six months, followed by five more months of debris cleanup and site restoration.
At least $279 million had been invested in the building before construction was halted in early 2010 – with all $279 million already written off by CityCenter

I stayed there in April at Vdara. It was a very nice hotel.
Did you stay there , The Aria or Mandarin Oriental ?
This hotel was never finished because it was not built correctly. I think it was supposed to be 60 stories and they halted it at about 25. It was structually unable to be built to its designed height.
I think there are major lawsuits involved.
Between the lines they are saying “there are already more hotel rooms in Vegas than can ever be filled, and we don’t see the economy improving to where demand will grow anytime soon”.
Supply and Demand. It’s right every time.

A major OOPS !
That’s a blessing in disguise because there was no way they will be able to fill up all those rooms if this hotel was completed. Now they can recoup some of their losses by suing contractors for doing such a shoddy job with construction.
Most of it was supposed to be condos I think. There a plenty of other half built monoliths on the strip.

Crappy construction is an old and continuing story in Vegas. When the last generation of old hotels (Stardust, Aladdin, etc.) were imploded, local witnesses were disconcerted at how easily they came down. Basically, Vegas is a movie set where everything is made out of balsa wood and oatmeal. Remember when a stray spark at the MGM Grand caused the entire hotel to simply explode?
I stayed at the Aria for one night to check the place out then scooted over to Harrahs for 4 additional free nights.
I thought Aria was REALLY nice inside, great pools etc.
The CityCenter outside i think is pretty ugly, Doesn’t really fit in with it’s surroundings.
Looks like it could be the Corporate headquarters for General Motors or something.
I thought the Vdara was really nice too. It is a condo hotel. All the rooms are suites with full kitchens. We lucked out and got a room on the 52 floor looking north over the Bellagio. What a view at night. During the day we could see 50 miles in each direction.
Also, the Vdara does not have a casino. It was nice to come back to at night and it was quiet. However, the Bellagio was right out the back door. The Aria and the Cosmopolitan were right out front.
What the strip really needs is a monorail that goes right down the middle from downtown all the way to Mandalay Bay. Of course , the taxis and bus line probably would not like that.
