Free Meals for All Detroit Schoolchildren This Fall

All Detroit Public Schools students from kindergarten through 12th grade will get free breakfast, lunch and snacks starting this fall under a federal pilot program aimed to eliminate the stigma that students feel when they get a free lunch. Districts in Michigan can participate if at least 40% of their students are entitled to public assistance.

“One of the primary goals of this program is to eliminate the stigma that students feel when they get a free lunch, as opposed to paying cash,” said DPS Chief Operating Officer Mark Schrupp. “Some students would skip important meals to avoid being identified as low-income. Now, all students will walk through a lunch line and not have to pay. Low-income students will not be easily identifiable and will be less likely to skip meals.”

I have a better idea. How ‘bout NONE of the students are given free food? And the parents step in and send bag lunches or lunch money with their kids?

Worked real well in the past. And no stigma at all.

Free lunches tend to be wasted more. They want cake and soda, not fruit and vegetables.

I am sure that the parents of these children get food stamps, bridge cards ( food cards), food boxes from Gleaners, and every Friday they get backpacks full of food to carry them through the weekend.

Some of these kids are so fat that they have to roll to school.

If this keeps up, every student in Detroit WILL be on the public dole because the productive citizens will give up and move away.

I’d have done it years ago. I’m sure it’s cheaper to feed them all simple food (oatmeal, soup’n’bread, apple) than to pay several gov’t employees 100K apiece to administer the program for who gets free and who doesn’t.
