Jim's stated before that Perry would be an acceptable candidate to him. No major hat throw into his corner by any means, but he's made clear that Perry isn't on his sh!tlist. There's a few posters that have been using one of JRs quotes to that effect. (I'd ping them but I just remember reading this somewhere in passing.)
Anyway, I'm from California, not Texas, so I don't claim any direct knowledge of Perry. As an outsider who's main link to the conservative world is through here, I'll say that there is simply no comparing what kind of horned, cloven hoofed monster Perry is being made out to be in the liberal media, versus the horned, cloven hoofed RINO he's on some of these pages.
For a guy that seems rather plain, either he's got a master Machiavellian streak that is throwing all for a loop, or we just need a little more time to process what he's about. He may be weaker than I'd caer for on the borders, but his response about 'concealed carry' today at the fair about had me laughing my ass off.
Anyway, once he gets the full Palin press colonoscopy, I'm sure we'll know quite a bit. I imagine it won't be as good as we hoped or as bad as we feared.
That's a very principled position. In a certain light I understand it philosophically. As a practical matter, every President and politician since and including George Washington has struggled with those principles and fallen short at times. I'd imagine being an absolutist in the information age is an interesting path to walk.
What would your top five politicians be? Current, if possible. Past, if not. Unless you're busy.
Well, we tend to be aggressive here, some more than others. I mean, I can write up long-winded essays (and I have, you might’ve seen a few the other day in that other thread I believe you were in). But the fact is, you start out by laying out why you may oppose a given candidate and try to be thoughtful about it and no matter how matter-of-fact it is without any specific attacks, it often is going to go down hill from there. Why ? Because the opponents will either go into denial, issue talking points/rationalizations, etc. or just go into outright personal attacks (just this evening, earlier, one vile moonbat on this website went nuts at my correcting them and the mods had to yank their post, and this one has gone “that way” before in pure bile). So, eventually, whatever started out well enough has turned into a flame war.
This Perry stuff is mild so far. You weren’t here for the Willard Wars. This website got so beaten down and demoralized when McCain took the nod that they were all set to accept the “inevitability” of Slick Willard as McCain’s running mate (and at the early outset, it was going to be either him or Joe Lieberman — I think even the RINOs in the party had to tell him Joe would rip the party apart). I was almost the last one here manning the ramparts to shout, “Hell, no !” to Willard being anywhere near the nomination. I shouted loud enough and long enough until it began to wake folks up. If I had even an ounce of influence in speaking out loudly and posting the truth about the guy that it forced McCain to go with that more distant choice of Palin, I will be proud of my accomplishment.
As I said before, too, if I’m very rough on Perry, it’s because I sincerly believe he isn’t the right one, and I use everything I can get my hands on and a bit more that the Lord gave me to be discerning. I was rough on Pawlenty earlier in the cycle for the same reasons, he wasn’t the right one, either (albeit for different reasons).
Well, nobody is expecting him to be the twin of Zero (unlike Slick Willard, who frankly is). It’s just that many of us (some do) want another Bush-style Presidency, and in many ways, he reminds us of Dubya (and let’s face it, without Dubya, he’d never have become Governor). A lot of Conservatives in Texas (and outside, for that matter) feel like he and Sens. Cornyn and Hutchison have been holding up stronger and bold Conservatives from moving into their jobs. I wish Perry had retired in ‘06 and someone like Michael Williams had succeeded him. He’s one of the most dynamic pols in TX, very articulate, charismatic, Conservative and he’s Black. Had he been Governor today, we’d have dragged him kicking and screaming into the Presidential race.
Mind me asking how young were you under Reagan ? We may be about the same age.
Yes, Mitt and Perry are exactly alike. /s
This is NOT another election where we can afford to install a RINO instead of a Conservative. If you want to place a Democrat in there, then go ahead and vote for Obama, and let our party install a Conservative.
Why does there have to be two candidates on the general ballot that stink like six week old rotting fish?
We’ve been Bush-whacked twice. I’m not buying into a three-peat, let me tell ya.
Ah, OK, you’re a little older. I was already fully immersed in politics in the ‘80s, even if I couldn’t cast a ballot until 1992.
“Stay out da Bushes !” ;-D
I was born and raised in West Texas and I don’t have a drawl.. I never could figure that out.. (I was also raised half of my pre-University days on a ranch)..
I don’t understand it either, frankly. Neither of my older sisters have one. Neither do my parents that I can discern. But I do. I hate it. My daughter makes fun of me. She was born in Florida.
Lol.. When I was driving from Homestead AFB (Fl.) back to Texas for 30 days leave.. I stopped in Northern Florida and I swear, there were more people at that gas station (I think it was Jacksonville) that talked with a drawl than any I had met in Texas.. :D
