At the old house, we had a bad outage once, and we moved into a motel for a few days, going home to tend, feed, and water the cats.
In the middle of nowhere, not only are there no lights, but also there is no water, heat, or anything else. (I know that you know that, LJ.)
The house had a back-up generator, but it wouldn’t start. Hubby got it started, but it wasn’t even enough power to run the well pump, so we gave up. It was a rental, and we had already made a lot of repairs on it, so we were reluctant to fix anything that expensive.

Now if the smoke detectors would stop chirping. There are five all connected. When the power went out last night I had to remove the batteries in the dark with a ladder and flashlight to stop the chirping. The power came back on and I had put them all back in again to stop the chirping. Then the power went back off again until now. :)
