Wisconsin's historic recall elections wrap up this week

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Wisconsin's series of recall elections concludes on Tuesday when voters go to the polls in two state Senate districts where Democrats are being forced to defend their seats.

**SNIP**

Nevertheless, Tuesday's two final votes, like the seven before them, will be watched closely.

Two Democrats who opposed Walker's anti-union bill and even fled the state for weeks in an unsuccessful effort to prevent a quorum and delay passage -- Jim Holperin of Conover and Robert Wirch of Pleasant Prairie -- will be defending their seats.

"As always in Wisconsin politics, one has to give the incumbent an edge," said Mordecai Lee, governmental affairs professor at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee.

"It is likely the two Democratic incumbents will win their recalls -- but it is not a slam dunk," he said.

Holperin seems to be in the tighter race. His rival is Kim Simac, founder of the Northwoods Patriots, a Tea Party group.

Though Simac is a political novice, the district has leaned Republican in the three years since Holperin was elected.

“I don’t trust al-Reuters analysis....what do those in Wisconsin say?”

It looks like we’ll get one back, the Northwoods race looks real good for Simac.

The Wirch race, I have no idea - likely the incumbent holds, that’s just my hunch.

I don’t spend any time over in the Kenosha area (Wirch)

I have been up North twice and it looks like it’s Simac’s race to lose.
My Two Pennies anyway -

It really depends on turnout....the Dems are dispirited..the race really means nothing to them..if a lot of them skip the polls, and the GOP turns out en masse you could take ‘em both..if you do, that will probably end any idea of recalling Walker..

My 2 cents is this. Last week - the naysayers said (and the fleebag supporting dems) that the GOP recalls would result in the Dems taking back control of the state Senate. Well folks, as I’ve said before, we showed the USA what We The People of Wisconsin are made out of. IMHO we could have kept all seats, but the two we lost were winnable in my book. WHY oh WHY doesn’t the GOP come out and say that the 14 fleeing Dem Senators DESERVE to lose their seats because they DID flee the state, were bought and paid for by the Obama campaign folks and heavy union $$$$ input. Lay it out there.

As for tomorrow’s race - same thing. Wirch’s area is the one in SE Wisconsin where the union thugs went to local businesses a while back and “demanded” that they put “support unions” signs in their windows or they would be boycotted. Businesses and people said NO WAY, union thugs, not going to happen. That little tidbit backfired big time. The union thugs, the whiney teachers union, the out of state 30+Million dollars spent on last weeks race fizzled and backfired. The Dems are demoralized to some extent. DO NOT underestimate these thugs.

As mentioned last week - all of you voters in these two state recalls are representing all of us in Wisconsin who cannot vote - so please get you, your entire family, friends and neighbors to go vote for the GOP candidates in the Dem recall tomorrow, Aug. 16. JUST DO IT. Let’s show them again, that Wisconsin cannot be bullied, lied to, lied about, co-opted, and influenced by out of state Dems trying to make Wisconsin Ground Zero for the 2012 Obama campaign. NOT HAPPENING on our watch.

GOP retained control of the State Senate last week and GOP has tomorrow to take back two seats from two of the fleeing 14 Dems who slithered their way to hide out in Illinois for three weeks. GO VOTE GOP Steitz and Simac tomorrow.

I will thank you from the bottom of my beer glass and my empty bowl of cheese curds. We’re not just a pretty face here in flyover country, I tell ya.

Tweet from KOS, on Real Clear Politics:

Just got @ppppolls results from two Wisconsin recall elections Tuesd. Dems will win both by double-digits. Remember, PPP nailed last week.

Are the Wisconsin Repubs going to TRY to win these? Dems are disillusioned after last week, and these could be easily won by a repub turnout.

My mother lives in Holperin's district.

Late last week she had a heart attack and is currently in the hospital.

I have to admit, one of my first thoughts (after finding out that she was going to pull through) was how glad I was that she had already voted by absentee ballot to throw out Holperin.

what do those in Wisconsin say?
This is just one person, but my mother lives in Holperin's district, and although she generally votes Republican, she has voted for him every time he's run for the last 20+ years. She always felt that he was a "good man" and that he cared about the people in the district.

After seeing him run and hide in Illinois, not only did she decide to never vote for him again, but she went out and collected signatures on the recall petition.

I hope there are a lot of people who think that way!

Our thoughts and prayers are with your mom in her recovery.

I hope, too that LOTS of folks see the light. Just remind everyone that these two DEMS DID flee the state. Disgusting why this is not brought up over and over as the main point of this recall. The Dems used these recalls to object to the way the GOP voted in the senate. This is NOT what recalls should be about. That’s for normal election day, so spread the word for recalling TWO of the DEM FLEEING 14. WHO the heck approves of a Wisconsinite fleeing to Illinois in the first place?

Byron York was filling in for Bill Bennett this morning and made a comment to the effect that polling doesn’t look good for either GOP challenger.

He didn’t give specific numbers for either race. he simply said that polling didn’t look good.

Near as I can tell, Byron York is pretty plugged in on political races.

I do hope he’s wrong though.

That would be great - I would love to see them both go down and we are right back where we started, which I agree would end the recall nonesense.

Over here in Dane County (Verona) all I can do is watch the polls tomorrow night.

Side note - I heard this morning that Baldwin is going to throw her hat in the ring for Kohl’s seat if Feingold doesn’t run, I’m guessing he won’t if we get a 2fer tomorrow -

I had to laugh out loud at that thought - if it’s Baldwin on the ticket there’ll be a Republican primary a mile deep - heck I could beat Baldwin in a statewide race in this climate... haha.
