Rick Perry’s Tenth Commandment
National Review Online ^ | April 25, 2011 4:00 A.M. | Kevin D. Williamson

Posted on 08/14/2011 9:20:10 AM PDT by Sudetenland

‘If Jeb Bush’s name were Jeb Smith, he’d be the next president of the United States,” says Texas governor Rick Perry, and then there’s a long pause in the conversation to let pass the unspoken corollary: “And if Rick Perry were the governor of Florida . . . ”

People constantly ask Governor Perry if he’s thinking about running for president. In fact, they ask him if he’s thinking about running for president so often that by now he almost certainly must be thinking about running for president, even if he wasn’t thinking about it before. He plays down that sort of thing (except when he doesn’t) and protests that he’s got plenty to keep him busy in Austin. And he is busy: He’s hip-deep in a ferocious fight to balance the state budget without instituting new taxes or liquidating the state’s rainy-day fund. He has a long list of parochial Texas action-items on his gubernatorial to-do list, like pushing down the cost of a bachelor’s degree from a state university to $10,000 and keeping his bespoke boot heel on the neck of the trial lawyers. But he’s also very busy in his campaign to renew — or reinvent — American federalism, taking an extraordinarily robust view of states’ sovereignty and an extraordinarily restrictive view of the “enumerated powers” listed in Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution. He’s written a book about the subject, Fed Up!, which is an order of magnitude more crotchety and idiosyncratic than your average raising-my-national-profile book. (He also published a very personal and occasionally hot-tempered defense of the Boy Scouts, On My Honor, lambasting the feminists and organized homosexuality in a way that suggests he’s not much interested in a Mitch Daniels–style truce on the social issues.)

This is a good, very long article on Rick Perry. I thought it well worth the read.

Great article! Thanks for posting it!

Here’s an artlicle Michael Reagan posted on his Facebook Page as recommended reading. (he didn’t write - he just posted it).

I don’t know how to post wordpress stuff on FB so feel free to post the article as a post of its own if you want.

Rick Perry is a RINO New World Order soclialist.......

He is more Bush then Reagan.

He supports Mexico president Fox’s position on “OPEN BORDERS”

He needs to go home.....I don’t care where he is from, I care about where his socialism will take us.

Right, you keep on lying.

Clearly you didn't bother to read the article and just as clearly you don't know very much about Perry.

Perry is the antithesis of a socialist. He has fought against big spending government his entire career. When he was still in the Democrat Party, he was one of the "Pit Bulls" who fought vigorously to cut spending.

He is unabashedly and aggressively for state's rights and a defender of the 10th Amendment. He believes that the 16th (income taxes) and 17th (direct election of Senators) Amendments both should be repealed.

You are soooooo far wrong that you make a joke out of you post.

Rick Perry sent the Texas Rangers to the border to help secure it as did he send national guard helicopters. He confronted Obama on the tarmac at Bergstrom with a written request for national guard to secure the border. He is the only governor who has dared to confront Obama and take him to task.

You really should inform yourself before you go spewing nonsense.

Who would you recommend true conservatives support? I'm sure we are all dying to know.

##

How many did he send? What results did they achieve?

There are only around 150 Texas Rangers, so you figure it out. He did what he could do. It’s not as if he has the U.S. military at his disposal. Obama refused him. Put the blame where it belongs. I blame the Feds not the states for the border problems since it is their duty to protect the border As much as I would liked to blame it on Obama he’s just the latest in a long line of presidents who haven’t addressed the problem. The dereliction of duty goes way back.

Great article and factually accurate.

Too many folks are running around here throwing out their little knee-jerk comments based on what they have been told or what they have read on some website and that have very little factual information in them.

Perry seems to evoke a strong emotional response in those who oppose him, spawned for the most part by ignorance and partisan support for their own anointed choice.

Thanks for linking the article. I guess maybe I will post it as well.

I was just wondering since I keep hearing that he sent the Rangers to the Border but can’t find any information on how many were sent and what they did there.

I would think that how many he sent, what their instructions were and what their results were would be something people should know.

I guess that information is a secrete since nobody else seems to know either.

Yeah. I mean, there's no facts to back that up, but yeah, totally.

He supports Mexico president Fox’s position on “OPEN BORDERS”

No he doesn't. If you read the full quote, he was talking about a border like what we have with Canada, not now, but some day in the distant future when Mexicans aren't trying to break into the U.S. for jobs.

Clearly you know absolutely nothing about Perry and your ignorance is glaring from that one little ill-informed and inaccurate comment.

Come back when you grow a brain and mature a bit.

Hey, do ya support in-state tuition for illegal aliens in CA, and is California’s illegal alien problem caused by the corrupt running the state, or their co-conspirators in D.C.?

He supports Mexico president Fox’s position on “OPEN BORDERS”

Was that unqualified open borders?

Or was there a greater context and were there qualifications to his statements?
