Rome - Diplomatic cables showed the United States confronted Italy about claims it paid Taliban not to attack its troops in Afghanistan, noting it suffered fewer casualties than other forces, media reported on Friday. Italy has already denied claims that it paid protection money to Taliban and other militants in an area where 10 French soldiers were killed in an ambush in February 2008 soon after taking over from Italian forces. (Snip) "Unfortunately, the significance of this contribution has been undermined by Italy's growing reputation for avoiding combat and paying ransom and protection money.

And in Iraq, they paid the terrorists an enormous amount of money to ransom a female Italian communist “journalist” who had been “kidnapped” by the terrorists—actually it was most likely a setup organized by the pro-terrorist journalist to raise funds for her allies. Then, in trying to sneak the released journalist out of the country, the Italians ran a US manned roadblock, getting one of their people shot and killed in the process. In a final piece of treachery, the Italians indicted the GI who had been left no choice but to fire at the car rushing the roadblock. The soldier, a National Guardsman from NYC, can never visit Italy or any other EU country, not that he probably would ever want to. With friends like these....
