GOP contenders compete in today's Ames Straw Poll in Iowa...
Listen live for spin, and results when available:

Just heard host Simon Conway say one campaign operative claimed that at least 20% of the people the operative dealt with today were Obama voters... interesting...
As many as 15,000 votes may be cast today.
I am a Bachmann supporter, but I humorously invented my own Bachmann “drinking game”
Take a shot whenever:
1. She mentions Obama will be a “one term President”
2. She is a Federal Tax Attorney
3. She understands the tax code
4. She and her husband created a business and jobs
5. She knows how to create jobs
6. She raised 5 children and took in 23 foster kids
7. She will repeal Obamacare
if you don’t get sent to the emergency room for alcohol poisoning by then:
8. She is a strong social conservative
9. She grew up in IA and is a 7th Generation Iowan.
10. The Sullivan Brothers
11. She grew up in a single parent home.
by then, hope you aren’t dead yet.
All joking aside, I wish she’d get to the more substantive stuff and plans.
Huntsman voters, ya think?
I like Herman Cain. I have not yet made up my mind.
I am surprised, though, that my niece and nephew who are 20 something and 30 something. Nephew not religious...niece VERY Christian... they both went for Cain independently.
This happened after the Fox debate. They said ... “we like THAT guy!”
I wonder if people are underestimating how much Cain can resonate with a younger generation.
12. She mentions Congress giving Obama “a 2 trillion $ blank check.”
Should be more than than. They predicted Bachmann sold 6,000. 40% of the vote would be pretty darn impressive. While I think she’s done well, that would be way beyond expectations. Likewise, if she is <25% or finishes worst than first, it may raise serious doubts about her organization skills, especially if Pawlenty does better than expected.
This number was from Fox, fwiw.
I think Cain is a dark horse. I think a lot of people who do not think of him as top tier favor him as their 2nd choice
Early “rumors” on turnout...
Record number of participants.... record number of tickets bought by people paying their own way... might signal a large write-in???
I have to agree. I was really disappointed in her speech. Maybe that what you got to do to win in Iowa but it was not a Presidential speech. She needs better speech writers.
Sadly my dvr is on the blink and I will have to find it online. Discussing these candidates with my husband he and I both agree we would have absolutely no reservations in voting for CAIN. He is very genuine and deeply cares for this country.
hmm, if that’s the case, then I suspect the write-in might be larger than expected.
if someone were to write-in for Perry/Palin, my guess is that they would have to register somewhere. Maybe that was in the Bachmann tent. Seems plausible enough. While I like Michele, if she gets over 40% that would be pretty amazing. I’m not seeing it given some of the criticism though.
Don’t forget the titanium spine. THAT one will kill ya.
I'm guessing, but I would say not very well. I don't think Sarah cares one wit about this poll, and since she won't be paying people to write her name in...
That’s raaaac...oh wait ...
:)
His speech today was excellent. Impassioned. Not at all telepromptery.
I wonder if Cain will get momentum. Honestly...I was surprised that my niece and nephew fell in love with the guy....
He’s “not Washington”....not “politician”...
I will be volunteering to help someone. It might wind up being him.
It would be HUGE if Perry or Palin got 1, 2, or 3 with write-in votes.
I wouldn’t count on it being Perry at this stage. He seems to be going top down trying to use establishment people to build momentum.
>>>It would be HUGE if Perry or Palin got 1, 2, or 3 with write-in votes.
Anywhere in the top half on write-ins will be quite telling. The bottom half of the crowd should take it as a clue to hang it up.
WADR, Perry’s speech was no better than has been given by Bachmann, Palin or a host of others.
