GOP contenders compete in today's Ames Straw Poll in Iowa...
As the "native," Bachmann had to win and Pawlenty had to be strong to survive. I'm disappointed Iowa didn't sent him packing.
Placement of others isn't too serious. I think Santorum may benefit from doing better than expected.
Cain did OK, maybe he met expectations but the straw poll didn't match the Des Moines Register poll where he's consistently been third. The press might use this to marginalize him further.
Sadly, I don't think this will thin the herd (Huntsman & co) this cycle. It was never going to mean anything for Newt or Romney.
I'm curious what others think.
Not quite. She was elected in 2006 and represents the MN 6th district but is only in her third congressional term.
He said yesterday, today’s vote would not make him quit the race. He spent a tiny fraction of what the other candidates did - this was all grassroots.
1. Congresswoman Michele Bachmann (4823, 28.55%)
2. Congressman Ron Paul (4671, 27.65%)
3. Governor Tim Pawlenty (2293, 13.57%)
4. Senator Rick Santorum (1657, 9.81%)
5. Herman Cain (1456, 8.62%)
6. Governor Rick Perry (718, 3.62%) write-in
7. Governor Mitt Romney (567, 3.36%)
8. Speaker Newt Gingrich (385, 2.28%)
9. Governor Jon Huntsman (69, 0.41%)
10. Congressman Thad McCotter (35, 0.21%)
So, Sarah Palin got nothing?
He needs to stay in it. I think a very important part of the process is the message conveyed by the candidates gets out to the masses. This primary is his opportunity to take his very pertinent message out to the people of this country.
That doesnt suprise me. The problem is politicians want to fix some aspect that can rally people, without addressing what the real problem is. It is prevalent everywhere in government.
But when the “conservative” view is created (we need a fence) then every conservative has to hold that same position or they become a pariah.
Where do you get that? She took office in January of 2007.
Yep, been a pariah a lot this month on FR.
My bad, got wrong info, Thought she was there longer. She’s still DC establishment. Still loves the pork. Still has no executive experience. We’ve already got one of those in the White House. We don’t need a 2nd one.
Palin is not running.
I said I was disappointed that Sarah didn’t get any write-in votes. My husband explained that people voted for declared candidates. He’s more savvy than I, so that is probably true.
I believe your husband is correct. I wouldn’t write-in a straw poll, but I would on election day. I was there and voted for a declared candidate and I am still waiting for Sarah.
McCain ended up winning the nomination.
IIRC, McInsane did poorly in the last straw poll. IOW, this poll is interesting but not conclusive.
I’m on the Cain Train too! This straw poll doesn’t mean a whole lot except to the pundits and people in IA. What matters are the caucuses and primaries.
I understand he'll be in Iowa at the fair tomorrow.
I wonder what excuse Jon "I have no plan, just like my ex-boss" Huntsman will have for his poor showing vs a guy who wasn't even a candidate until this morning.
He said he is in it for the long run. I was very glad to hear that.
Thank you.
