As Politico speculated this morning (and AP relayed in an earlier post), Ron Paul actually stands a chance to win the Iowa straw poll today particularly if turnout is low. The early word is that the voting universe actually looks to be quite strong, but the excitement outside Pauls tent this morning certainly reinforced the idea that hell do well. And Paul himself says hes feeling confident.
Its pretty exciting, Paul said to me, in between signing his book for young fans and chatting briefly with supporters. Theres a lot of enthusiasm. I think its really interesting because nobody knows how this is going to come out.
Nobody does know, of course, but the buzz is that the contest essentially comes down to Rep. Michele Bachmann and Paul. If Paul wins, though, it will reflect the intense loyalty of his fiercest supporters more than it will reflect any kind of significantly increasing widespread appeal.
But Paul thinks differently about what might drive a victory today. In his mind, it wouldnt have anything to do with low turnout or a cache of committed followers. It would be because his message has had time to marinate.

I’m sorry but I personally believe that a snow flake in hell would have a better chance than the perennial candidate Ron Paul. But I have to give him high marks for at least running year after year after year......
He’s the modern day Harold Stassen. This straw poll is meaningless except to give the talking heads and suedo-pundits something to get them through the week-end. What a joke!!
You could hear the the Fed gasping in D.C., from the west coast.
Classic.
I agree with him on a couple of things but I’ll never vote for him.
He has no chance, why doesn’t he fix the Fed while in a position to do so?
What are we, up to 11 now?
Cabinet member yes, president never.
He can win the whole wheat field.
He will NEVER be elected President of the United States.
He is wasting his time and ours.......
He has ran three times over the course of 24 years (1988, 2008, 2012). For comparison’s sake, Ronald Reagan ran three times (1968, ‘76, ‘80) before being elected. There a lot of things to go after Ron Paul on, but perennial candidate is not one of them.
He does have some really dedicated Paul-bots fully experienced at stuffing the straw poll ballot box each election year run. LOL.
Paul should not be mocked.
It would serve Republicans better to explain the problems with Paul’s controversial policy positions instead of throwing his base to the Democrats through ridicule.
When McCain ran, among a thousand other criticisms, the Dems and everybody else laughed loud and long about his age, as in old that is.
Well, Ron Paul is 80. Forget it.
Forgot to add my /sarc
And that's the crux of a Paul candidacy. There are several things he says and believes in that many conservatives (including myself) agree with BUT there are some where he is just plain way way off the reservation and to many folks he is just too much of a loose cannon rolling around the deck to take seriously.
