Ames, Iowa Mike Huckabee thinks that someone who doesnt finish in the top two stands a chance at winning the caucuses, but not somebody who did not participate in todays straw poll which would rule out Mitt Romney and Rick Perry.
He doesnt see the importance of the Ames Straw Poll ending if Ron Paul wins today.
I think that it shows the capacity [of Paul campaign] to organize, Huckabee tells National Review Online, referring to a Paul victory, but I dont think his message is credible. And his statement on Iran the other night was totally off-the-wall.
Asked if he thinks someone who doesnt participate in the straw poll at all can win the caucuses, Huckabee gives a blunt answer.
No. I dont, he says.
I guess there is no hope for Mitt Perry or Palin or Rudy. Mike just laid down the law of winning IA.
I don’t care very much what Mike Huckabee says. His commentary and a quarter might get him 10 minutes on a parking meter.
Ron Paul is the all-time champion at winning “straw polls”. That tells me that “straw polls” aren’t worth jack ——!
This from a guy who couldn’t beat John McCain for the nomination last time.
Who cares what Huckabee thinks (or Iowa as far as that goes)?
The Iowa Straw Poll isn’t very important. In 2007, McCain got 0.7%, and he won the nomination.

Regardless what anyone thinks of Paul (or Gingrcich for that matter) this was a lousy move by FOX.
Am I the only one who is angry that IOWA gets to decide who succeeds and who fails in a primary by using some silly straw poll? Our broken politcal system begins with these early primaries and media-hyped events like the Ames Straw Poll.
This is just an off the cuff answer. Nothing to back it up. No straw poll is so important that, absent participation in it, one is doomed to lose an election that is six months off.
Utter nonsense.
I am surprised Huck said it, and he probably only said it because he came in second last time and won the caucuses against the weakest filed in history and he now sets himself up as “the guru”.

The Iowa Strw Poll has been made pretty much meaningless by the Ron Paul Accolites.
The three front runners, Perry, Palin, and Romney didn’t even bother with it, which should tell you a lot.
Iowa doesn’t get to decide anything. Iowa doesn’t have a primary, much less decides who wins or loses one. Don’t confuse media talk with reality. SuperTuesday makes or breaks a candidate.
That right there tells you ALL that you need to know about straw polls.

Two points - one, who cares what Huckabee thinks? And two, since the Iowa caucus winner rarely wins the nomination, even if what he says is true, it might be a plus for Perry, Palin or Romney.
The early states are great because they allow a candidate that has little funding, but is great at retail politicking and has good ideas to come to the fore. The great thing about Iowa caucus-goers and New Hampshire primary voters is that most don’t give a you know what who the media says is viable or not. It doesn’t matter to them. If they think Rick Santorum is the best, despite his 2% in national polls, they’ll vote for him. Likewise, even if Rick Perry was the leader of the pack, Iowans won’t mind putting him in dead last.
While I wish more states were like this, and more could be like this with the advent of the internet, only Iowa and New Hampshire have an ingrained tradition of it.
so sayeth the bass player of the Little Rockers...
