LONDON: Of the many stories of Asians countering attacks in London and elsewhere during the recent unrest, one of the lesser known is that of Indian-origin shopkeeper Kiran Bhowan, who used a cricket bat to chase away looters.
Three rioters kicked their way into his shop in east London in daylight on Thursday, but were successfully chased away by Bhowan. One of the three, aged 17, on Friday pleaded guilty to violent disorder and burglary at City of Westminster Magistrates' Court.
James Bolton-Smith, prosecuting lawyer, said the teenager and his accomplices forced their way behind the counter.
He said the incident was horrifying for Bhowan, according to the Daily Telegraph.
He said: "The shopkeeper produced a cricket bat and managed to chase the three young men out of the shop before they took anything. The defendant admitted his particular part in interview and admitted trying to steal cigarettes because he thought the police were too busy to do anything."
Bhowan, 50, said he did not want his heroism "glorified", and told newspersons: "It was frightening and I'm still shaking at the moment. It's nerve-wracking when you have your family at the back of the shop - though fortunately they weren't here at the time."
He added: "Nothing was going through my mind when they came in - you've just got to make a decision. It had to be done, as simple as that. You have to take the first one even if 20 of them come in. You just can't let them walk over you. I don't want this glorified, I don't want more people coming around".
Very likely. It is finally becoming part of the Anglosphere. It has taken 50 years to shake off the smothering influence of British Socialists, but it is happening. Too bad the first world war was so destructive that it prevented the permanent installation of Western culture into Africa.

Now if India keeps moving toward individual rights, she will be a powerhouse!
A few years back I had been biking along the Esplanade in Boston ( where the July 4th fireworks and concert is held ). I finished biking right at the hatch-shell and there were thousands of Indians gathered for some type of event.
Turned out the event was India Independence Day. So I hung around a bit for the beginning, the master of ceremonies got up announced they were going to open the event with the National Anthem. They opened with the American so I stood up and so did all those thousands of Indians with hands over their hearts. They were singing along to the words - it was stirring to say the least. There were a few people sprawled out on the grass, blathering away, not paying attention. These folks? They were as pasty white as I am. Native born Americans as far as I could tell.
You can bet I stayed standing after the American anthem was over and they played the Indian anthem.
Got a chance to talk with any number of celebrants and they all raved about how they loved America and how their success could never be realized in their native land.
I'll say this - I have yet to meet a lazy Indian here in the states. Sure, they exist somewhere but the ones I know treasure education, hard work, family and success. God Bless Them - they put any number of our native born brothers and sisters to shame.
Like to see them take on bunch of retired Gurkhas.....

There aren't enough synonyms for "OUCH !!!!!" for that.
During the time I was in South Africa I met many Indians. To them America was like the promised land.
