Hundreds of U.S. Data Centers Closing (BRAND NEW CENTERS TO BE SCRAPPED)

To save money, the U.S. government will shut down hundreds of data centers across the country and consolidate their services into its remaining data centers.

The White House Office of Management and Budget recently announced that it would be shutting down 373 U.S. government data centers by 2012.

Over the last two years, the number of U.S. data centers has quadrupled, and yet they are running at only about 27 percent utilization, according to the Office of Management and Budget. The maintenance costs of these data centers, including backup power supplies, air conditioning, fire-suppression and special security devices, has been astronomical, causing them to consume 200 times more power than the typical office space. By more fully utilizing the remaining data centers, the White House hopes to maintain current service levels while drastically cutting costs.

"Over the last two years, the number of U.S. data centers has quadrupled, and yet they are running at only about 27 percent utilization"

So now we know why the CIO quit the Obama Administration and we also see the only cost reductions that Obama is undertaking is the costs he created in the first place.

WONDERFUL! Now headed for a fire sale near you....servers less than 2 years old .... some never even used.

Government Efficiency at its best....dig hole...then fill in hole....repeat

Obama’s stimulus program is really wonderful isn’t it? Spend billions of dollars building data centers and then close down the facilities.

I knew when Democrats were given a trillion dollars to spend that corruption would sooon follow.

From the article:
The shutdowns are a part of the Obama Administration's attempts to cut government costs called the Campaign to Cut Waste.
Hopefully, they are looking for the biggest bang for the taxpayer buck. To cut meaningful waste, I'd suggest they start in the Oval Office.

Server farm

Think computers on racks 3 stories high in rows front to back with only 30-72” separating the rows.

Each one using about 14MWs of power and contain millions of dollars in servers.

One server farm in Washington State cost 100M to open.

Makes you wonder why they aren’t using outside companies to host this stuff. Obviously if it a national security issue, we need to keep that in house, but everything else? Its a epic fail....what a disaster.

You better believe that a bunch of folks “in the know” made mucho dollars— construction, equipments, real estate commissions, etc.

And some of that found its way back to the DNC.
