Rick Perry has been widely touted as a Republican presidential candidate who could appeal Tea Party voters, but some in the anti-tax movement wonder if his record as Texas governor stacks up to his rhetoric.
After all, they say, there are reasons to think he's a spendthrift. He once campaigned for Democrat Al Gore, reviled by the Tea Party for being Bill Clinton's vice president and for his campaigning on climate change, and he even spoke kindly about Hillary Clinton's healthcare reform efforts.
Then there is the issue that he was once a Democrat.
So as Perry plans the 2012 White House bid many observers expect he may announce as early as this week, some Tea Party faithful wonder what to make of him.
"They're vetting, they want to know if he is for real," Dallas Tea Party leader Katrina Pierson, said, adding she has fielded questions about Perry's record from Tea Party members as far flung as California, Iowa and New Hampshire.
Tea Party voters could have a big impact on the Republican nomination if they vote heavily in early U.S. primaries, which historically see low voter turn-out.
Perry "speaks the Tea Party language," said Sean Theriault, a political science professor at the University of Texas. But such rhetoric could alienate independent voters, who play a crucial role in U.S. presidential elections.
"I think the Republican nomination for him would be much easier than the general election," Theriault said.
Perry, who followed George W. Bush as Texas governor in 2000 after Bush was elected to the White House, has earned headlines for saying that perhaps Texas should leave the United States and for holding a prayer rally this month that drew 30,000 people.
He was an early booster of the fiscally conservative Tea Party movement, which takes its name

Good enough for me then!
Thanks!
“She is too fat to the right for me”
She looks good on all sides to me... ;>
But seriously, I saw Perry give a speech a while back, and he was just a little too....slick.
So, in other words, it is much easier to get out of than any other required vaccination? I had a son who had a bad reaction to MMR shot and was hospitalized when he was young. They kept trying to give him the shot again every year. I went through a lot more stuff than listed at your link every year he was in school to keep him from getting it and I even had documentation of his bad reaction to it. He was never dropped by any of our doctors or had any thing else happen due to his lack of MMR immunization which is required everywhere unlike Gardasil. I would take everything that site says with a grain of salt.
So, Rick perry is also bad. Is there any candidate in the republican party? Hope, we don’t loose this election based on pure conservative nonsense !
He is a fighter.
He has been thumping his finger in Obamas chest from day one.
That’s what makes me like him.
There’s no percentage in him busting obamas chops while obama rides high
I have disagreed with Perry, but I think he is genuine
You mean vaccines like tetanus and Hep B?
Perry didn’t usurp anything - unless it was to make it easier to opt out than the current regulations at the time. The State legislature delegated the authority to mandate vaccines to the Executive Branch, the State Department Health Services. Perry directed the man he appointed.

Exactly ! A ticket of perry & hermann cain will be a great ticket !
Throw me in the “no” crowd from Texas. This SOB re-discovers conservatism every time an election rolls around.
Why should any kid have to get any shot? The fact is that all states require kids in school to get certain shots to attend school. Periodically new shots are added to the list and sometimes some are dropped. I do not understand why this particular shot was such a big deal.
This is a standard conservative habit.
We need a candidate who can WIN. Lesser of 2 evils wins out, particularly when the evil is *Really* evil.
Don't forget that elections are won or lost in the middle 10-20% of the voters. We need to win people who are not even paying attention yet.
I love hermann cain!
imho gardisil is least of our problems. i just want someone who will keep US from collapsing
Let us get to the debate ! Let perry answer those controversy questions ! Look at the hit job in yahoo ! They are afraid of something ! I never see any articles on Mitt Romney like this one ! They would decimate Romney with his healthcare and neutralize all the advantage !
I’m from TX, and I will have to hold my nose to vote for this man if he gets the nomination.
Governor GoodHair has done a few good things, and a few not so good things.
Mainly, I just don’t get good vibes from the guy. He seems too slick——and of course both the Gaardasil controversy and the Trans Texas Corridor are 2 big projects I totally disagreed with, to say nothing of the “Dream Act”.
The legislature of the State had decided to make vaccines mandatory and delegated the authority to name new vaccines to the Executive Branch, under the Department of State Health Services. They’d also mandated opt out, with an application due each year that contained a ‘seal.’ They didn’t describe the ‘seal,’ so some were claiming that parents had to go to Austin to obtain a certain form with the raised seal on it. Perry’s EO, directing the man he appointed to the DSHS, called for making the form and its seal available on the Internet.
Governors should govern, don’t you think? That would include directing the Executive Branch, hands on.

Better than the Bushs?
I agree. we need a fighter.
You need a break so go camping (solo). Sarah’s busy.
And then when they finish school they can’t legally work in the country. Great idea.
