September 17, 1862.....The Battle of Antietam, near Sharpsburg, Maryland. The bloodiest day in American history with 23,000 casualities.

America at the time, North and South, had a population of around 35 million. The equivalent human toll in modern day America would be a battle on American soil that had over 200,000 casualities in a single day.
