Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Wednesday that it would be "short-sighted" to abandon high speed rail ambitions in California, even as Democratic lawmakers here show signs of concern over the multi-billion dollar project.
On Tuesday, some of the project's supporters expressed reservations after seeing an environmental report estimating that the first segment of the rail line could cost between $3 billion and $6 billion more than expected.

I suspect he owns some of the land the high speed rail line from LA to Las Vegas would be built on.

Harry is convinced the moon is made out of money, and his illegitimate son Willie Green works for the California project.

This cracks me up. If I may use an analogy:
The family is in debt to its eyeballs, dad just got a 20% cut in pay, and mom says WE STILL NEED TO BUY THAT MOTORHOME!
Uh huh.

I suspect he owns some of the land the high speed rail line from LA to Las Vegas would be built on. Admittedly, that might actually be useful. Instead, the high speed rail, segment one, will be built from the least populated part of the California central valley to another extremely low populated part, destroying dozens of farms in the process, simply because that segment is the cheapest and easiest to build and the theory goes: build part of it, and you're committed to the whole 40 billion dollar plan.
Railway from nowhere to nowhere.

If the project were cancelled, Reid would probably lose a lot of money from kickbacks.

Well, at least he’s consistent. Seriously though, I wonder where he thinks the money is coming from. Does he understand that, even though this is Liberal California, even Jerry Brown is starting to face the reality of no money? What’s the answer? Force workers to build the rail system for free?

Supporters of the rail project, the nation's most ambitious, said the private sector will be a significant source of funding and that the money will start flowing once work begins. Read more The private sector is always the source of funding for this stuff, whether they want to be or not. California is milking the private sector dry.
