After a delay of more than two days, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has "decided to follow the law" and release the names, ranks, hometowns and units of those killed in the Aug. 6 Chinook helicopter crash in Afghanistan, Pentagon spokesman Col. Dave Lapan said Wednesday. The names will be released in the next 24 hours. Panetta "never intended not to release the names," Lapan said, explaining that a delay in their release was the result of a request from military commanders in the Special Operations community who wanted to review the policy of releasing names "because of possible (security) implications

The list, ping
Let me know if you would like to be on or off the ping list
Goodie. Let’s make their families targets too.
Many of the families have already been on the news. I know they are all proud of their SEALs but it probably isn’t a good idea. Makes me think of the Nelson DeMille novel, The Lion’s Game. Not good.

Panetta always intended to release the names.
Security implications be damned.
Request to be added to list, pls...
we can't trust the military anymore either......they are paycheck and rank motivated and whatever it takes, they'll do...
Isn’t it curious that this radical adminstration decides to “follow the law” in some cases and “waive the law” in others
Why, you would think the entire “law” was their own subjective toy store, and they got to pick the winners and losers based on, say, maybe scoring political points with one constituency or another
Did “Leon” ever lobby to change the law and identify CIA agents killed in line of duty? Since their identity is kept secret to protect their agency and their families and contacts...
Is this for the purpose of providing gloating rights and pin-ups for jihadis? I can understand wanting Bin Laden’s killers to get their due respect from the American public, but I question the wisdom. Moreover, as Karl Rove noted yesterday, this administration was foolish to immediately announce the death of Bin Laden so soon after his elimination, likely missing an opportunity to exploit some of the information gathered in the raid before it was widely known to be compromised. They further erred by providing the world with the idenity of Seal Team Six - ensuring their targeting and a PR victory for the enemy in the event of a successful attack or accident.

secuity implications indeed
attempted Iranian hit on wife of US Navy Captain of USS Vincennes
And back then, these guys were amateurs compared to the terrorist networks now in existence
Why not just have the Franklin Mint make collector’s plates to sell in the Middle East, to recoup the cost of the lost helicopter? /s
I think this puts every family member in jeopardy.
This is foolish at best & treasonous at worst.
The law? Since when has it become LAW? Panetta is a progressive Clintonite but I always thought he had a little class.
WHO leaked the names to the media already?
I predicted something like this *sigh*Poison Photo-Drop .. decision to release photographs .. will imperil nation .. its defenders.

null and void to Sergeant TimBefore he is done I fully expect him to release the names, addresses and phone numbers of anyone anywhere in the world who has ever provided any information to agency workers.
The damage to US intel will last multiple generations.
not only did they serve our boys up for retribution, now they want to release the info so their families will be attacked??
WTF is that about? since when is this SOP??
if anything happens to those families, the admin will be held responsible for needlessly and recklessly endangering them
seriously, WTF
Next, we will black out the names of our police force, just in case the populace is outraged by their actions.
I don’t think this is a good idea.
Their families could become targets
Not only is this an act of treason but the act is an attempt to discourage future enlistment of Special Ops, if they think their names and family will be revealed and betrayed by their own country. Leon Panetta is a domestic enemy of the USA and is in a rank waaay to high.
Interesting that we will give the enemy these names but wouldn’t release a photo of Bin Laden so we wouldn’t offend them.
Very surprised the photo hasn’t leaked by now anyway. Figured Biden would put it on his July 4th part invites or something.
“I think this puts every family member in jeopardy.”
And thus could also compromise the safety of other members of the unit.
