I like to think those Reagan Democrats still had enough critical thinking skills to last a lifetime.
Many did, note how Obama underperformed among seniors, a traditionally Democrat friendly group. The 35 year old Reagan Democrats who lost is job in 1978 is a 70 year old man today. Obama's base of support is the < 30 crowd. They don't know Jimmy Carter as anything other than a bumbling old man who says dumb things. They don't teach about the Iran Hostage crisis in schools. The < 30s didn't understand just how bad it can get when you have an naive idiot who wants to change the world in the White House. Well now they do. And all but the most committed crazies are going to start to feel the pull of self interest.

They don't teach about the Iran Hostage crisis in schools. The disaster at Desert One was an embarrassment to Americans who were proud of their country.
Even if they did teach it today, imagine how many teachers would teach it as a vindication for their hatred of America.
