Fox News ^

Terrified diners in London told Tuesday how rioters brandishing baseball bats smashed their way into a top restaurant and forced them to hand over wedding rings, cell phones and wallets.

Staff at two-Michelin-starred The Ledbury, in the affluent west London suburb of Notting Hill, were forced to confront the gang of intruders with rolling pins and kitchen utensils Monday evening in a desperate bid to protect customers.

“I was gonna say.....shouldn’t a sizable kitchen have lots of knives?”

Maybe they lock the knives up over there.

Silly asses - they all should boil water for tea and have it ready in all the shops. Better yet, how ‘bout fish ‘n chips?

How did these thugs get baseball bats? They don’t play baseball over there. Probably bought them at flea markets.

They need bat control. Don’t they have bat control over there? What barbarians!

“Interesting how the restaurant staff fought back with kitchen utensils.”

Fire extinguishers would work a treat too. Only a few seconds of juice though.

Respectfully not disagreeing with the sentiment (exception being in the case of “you’re not gonna make it”), but it is important to keep in mind a calmness of purpose. A coolness if you will.
Close combat training experts specifically address this need. You cannot think clearly in close combat if you are angry or cannot control your fears. In the face of high epinephrine (adrenalin), rational thought is impaired by the natural instinctive response to flee danger. Several websites deal with this,m as well as Mossad Ayoub’s training course, among many others.

A cool calm mentality, with training for automatic movements: fire full clip, rapid reload of new clip, eyes focused on target. In the case of edged weapons, control of your weapon as well as use of the local items at hand. This is just part of what is taught.

Several reports that local sporting goods stores have sold out of US made Louisville sluggers. Did not distinguish who was doing the buying though intimated that it was people defending themselves, and the shop owners making their own custom “choppers”— medieval like.

Watching all this made me determine that the next time I travel I leave my valuables in a vault and take only fun costume jewelery and imitation gemstones

I will travel the way I always have, any where it is legal I will be armed.

Each police constablulary has a “firearms unit” it can call up. Each London metropolitan police district has its own firearms unit. A bit silly, because by the time a bobbie has need of a firearm, it may be (is) too late.

Kitchen utensils, that would include butcher knives and meat cleavers. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPZDYTjai5E

Give me a tenderizing mallot and I could pulverize a "racist skinhead's" face.

A thread earlier today pointed to U.K. Amazon, showing that sales of baseball bats were up 13,000% (or 130x). I thought, "Good, people are starting to defend themselves." I didn't realize it was the bad guys were were stocking up.

Having everyone fight back, either using improvised weapons or mobbing the ringleader, is a great idea. Except that most people are cowards. When things like this happen most people either run screaming for the exits, or they curl up on the ground and passively wait for their turn to be attacked while praying that showing their bellies will elicit mercy. No, people need to steel themselves for these kind of confrontations before they happen, as they are happening with increasing frequency and ruthlessness, and be mentally prepared. We’ve all relied on this “let the authorities handle it” hogwash for far too long, and our societies present bountiful hunting grounds for just these kind of thugs to act with impunity.

How about golf clubs?

I could live with Golf Club Control! Tiger Woods would appreciate that as well.
