The Washington Posts Philip Rucker caught Mitt Romney explaining how to think about economic policy when the labor market is depressed, housing has tanked, households are broke and the Fed is limited by near-zero interest rates:
Romney criticized Obamas $787 billion stimulus package, saying it did not create long-lasting jobs. He said he would have lowered tax rates, instituted fair trade policies and boosted energy independence to help create sustainable private-sector jobs.
"The challenge with so-called stimulus is it tends to be throwing a little gasoline on the fire," Romney said. "It causes some heat. . . . It just doesnt cause permanent heat. Its not like putting a log on the fire."

But notice how he said he wanted "fair trade". This is progressive code, this is big government lingo.
As I have previously posted(and you can easily find this in all kinds of places)fair trade is social justice
Again I say...as I did in another post...OMG! NO!
Mitty Romney for president! Who’s with me? Woo-hoo! Yeah!! [super-sarcasm]
Tokyo Rove, the RNC and Juan McStain must be so proud of him.
One sure way to ensure an Obama win in 2012 will be for the establishment, country club Republican leadership to push this guy again on us as the parties nominee...
I do not like Romney, but, to be fair, the title of the piece does not represent what Romney said in the quoted passage.
John McCain, with better hair.
Hate to burst your bubble, but the headline has nothing to do with Romney’s quote. He said the actions of the stimulus would not have long lasting effects. He also said that he would have used tax cuts, fair trade, and opened up more area to drilling for his stimulus, which he believewd would have a long lasting effect (be the log) as opposed to short term bounces in paychecks.
But no where did he say the stimulus wasnt big enough.
You are right. This is really disingenuous. It's like something I'd see on MSNBC.
(Won't be voting for Milt in the primary but can't we be fair about it?)
Come on now Cricket - the man has an ‘R’ after his name so he must be ok. He has slick hair and talks good too.
I despise Mitt Romney and will not vote for him if he gets the GOP nomination. However, I don’t see any quote in the article that suggest he wanted a “Larger, Longer Stimulus”.
I took the statement to mean that stimulus packages don’t do much good, beacause they only produce temporary results and that different policies that create long term growth are needed.
Now that I have defended Mitt, I want to remind everyone that he is a Liberal/Socialist pro-abortion, anti-gun, pro-illegal, pro-socialized medicine phony who invented Obamacare and first claimed to be a “Conservative” just before the 2008 primary season.
"The challenge with so-called stimulus is it tends to be throwing a little gasoline on the fire," Romney said. "It causes some heat. ... It just doesnt cause permanent heat. Its not like putting a log on the fire."
A little heat? That's not enough. Put a log on the fire. That's bigger. He said fair trade. That's big government lingo, fair trade is social justice.
The headline is accurate.
Romney/Obama for president.
Not.
It appears the major diff between RINOmney and the Cretin-in-Chief is a difference in color.
However, on the IQ side, they are sooooo matched.
LLS
What an ass. Not as bad as McCain, but only in the Charlie-Manson-was-better-than-Jeffery-Dahmer kind of way.
——————He also said that he would have used tax cuts, fair trade——————
Right.
And what is fair trade?
It’s social justice! Here:

Go to a search engine and type in “fair trade” “social justice”
This stuff is very easy to find.
I do not like Romney, but, to be fair, the title of the piece does not represent what Romney said in the quoted passage.
+++++++++++++
I agree. There is nothing in his statement that infers in any way that he favors a larger or longer stimulus. The author of the article is trying to make something out of nothing.
And I’m no Romney fan either.
