WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama is asking Congress to approve new initiatives to help some of America's 1 million unemployed military veterans find work, including tax credits for companies that hire out-of-work vets.
The proposal Obama is to outline Friday is part of the president's efforts to return to a focus on jobs after spending weeks mired in the contentious debt-limit debate that consumed the White House for much of the summer.
His announcement was to come shortly after the Labor Department releases a new round of nationwide unemployment data.
Last month's jobs report was dismal, with the country's unemployment rate ticking up to 9.2 percent and job growth slowing nearly to a halt.
The White House says the sluggish economy creates additional challenges for veterans looking to enter the civilian labor market. About 1 million veterans are unemployed, according the administration, including former 260,000 service members who joined the military after the Sept. 11 attacks.

No mention of the new homeless because of Obama policies.

He should resign and allow our economy to rebuild...that’s the best aid he could give all of us.
This is desperation and exploitation.
Exactly!!
The Defense Appropriations Bill regularly wastes US$60 Billion a year on pork procurement projects alone.
There should be no problem taking $30B from procurement (051) and shifting $20B to Veterans education, training, and rehabilitation (702).
Literally should take under 20 minutes to choose the already pinpointed waste and graft programs in the DoD budget, and shift the monies to Veterans education, training, and employment programs.
Anyone who is telling you otherwise is either a knuckle dragging know-nothing or gets his bread buttered by the DoD procurement Porkulus Buffet.
The only problem is that in DC, Veterans don’t have unsavory lobbyist firms whispering in the ear of CongressCritters and stuffing checks in the breast pocket of Congressional Appropriations Committeepeople.
He must have one big dart board in the Oval Office.
Well maybe if we weren’t so deeply involved in giving aid to West Basutoland and Mozambique and backing the clown circus in Libya, we might HAVE aid for unemployed vets.
20-30m illegals working in the US
10% unemployment (at least)... or 14m Americans unemployed
gee... where could we find 14m jobs... hmmm... so difficult to solved... hmph...
No he doesn’t.
This is pathetic.
Spend more taxpayers money to try to give businesses tax breaks to hire vets when the problem is that they are not doing enough business to justify hiring ANYONE.
Or they are afraid to hire more people because they don’t know if they can afford to keep them on when Obamacare kicks in or more insane regulations are excreted by Lisa Jackson, et al.
He really is incapable of seeing reality. Ryan, Cantor and the gang should run to the microphones and beat this into the ground.
Targeting tax credits to manipulate businesses to hire from a certain demographic is a form of social engineering. Just lower taxes and decrease regulation across the board and businesses will hire from all demographics.
Vets are the camel’s-nose-under-the-tent, to defuse conservative opposition. Eligibility will be restricted to vets that are also members of Democrat constiuent groups, and then the vet requirement will be dropped, and it will just be Democrat constituent groups, in heavily unionized industries and regions.
Who says that is what these vets need? Could it be that the reason these vets are not finding work is because of the same reason everyone else is out of work? There are no jobs.
Throwing money at a situation when there is no evidence that will help is foolish. What are we to train these men and women for? Green Jobs? Press Operator at the Fed? I don't see how this will help.
Obama and AP. Pretty big liars there.
1. Change it from "aid for unemployed vets" to "employment for unemployed vets."
2. Change it from "tax credits for companies that hire vets" to "tax cuts for companies and Americans who pay tax."
3. Change it from "vets" to "veterans and all Americans who support our veterans."
The new plan will be called: The Full Employment Tax Cut for Veterans and America Act ... but we'll just call it the Veteran's Appreciation Act for short.
Surely Obama appreciates our veterans. Right?
Vets are wayyy too smart for that. We know when we're being taken down the primrose path; and, we have a good suspicion about which party (apparently) suppressed votes from active duty overseas military. We also know which party is for radical and severe cuts in Military funding.
Recall when Mister Obama went to a gym rather than to visit wounded Soldiers and Marines? THAT reveals his true feelings toward anybody in (or formally in) the Military.
.
Obama’s only strategy is going to be to try to change the subject and vilify Republicans in any conceivable way possible.
As a veteran, I find Obama’s plan wicked and dishonest. He has found another way to push the victim button. If the SOB will realize that a healthy job market will help vets the most, I may take him seriously. Vets don’t want special favors. They want the same opportunities as everyone else. They can compete for jobs with the best of them.
Watch out Veterans, when the ONE Targets you for Help, look out for the Knife in the Back. Meaning watch out for your VA Hospital Benefits.
