Fighting cancer, Chavez seeks aid from deities

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) -- President Hugo Chavez told a gathering of soldiers Thursday that he's seeking divine support from the indigenous deities and spirits of Venezuela's central plains to help him survive cancer.

"Cancer? What is that for me? I have faith in the spirits of the plains that I'll prevail. I will live and we will win the elections next year," Chavez told hundreds of troops massed in formation at Fort Tiuna, Venezuela's largest military installation.

Some of Venezuela’s previous dictators have been big into Santeria, etc. (especially one fellow whose name escapes me now, but he ruled in the 1930s and always had a Santeria witchdoctor at his side).

also believes in Santeria, and in keeping a certain House clean of the spirits...)

I hope that O’s MIL isn't slicing chickens in the Hut...she and her daughter are quite capable of scaring spirits all on their own. I remember the story of Hugo's idol, Fidel Castro, bringing live chickens into his NYC hotel room back in ‘59(?). I believe they were for dinner and not Santeria.
