A police officer is being investigated after being caught on tape beating a videographer outside of his home in March.
A Las Vegas police department review found that Officer Derek Colling violated police policies when he used 'excessive force' on Mitchell Crooks.
The incident happened on the night of March 20 when Mr Crooks, 36, was in his driveway videotaping police as they investigated a burglary report across the street.
Mr Crooks said that when he refused to stop filming, Mr Colling arrested and beat him, with the sounds of the altercation recorded by the camera.
In the video, Mr Crooks can be heard yelling in pain while Colling can be heard telling him to 'shut up.' At one point the officer tells him that his decision not to turn off the camera put him in 'a world of hurt.'

Quick to taser, quick to beat bloody, quick to say "turn off the video camera."
I hate to say it, but if they keep going the way they’re going, the po-po are going to find themselves “in a world of hurt.”
LEO Unions pushed out the Joe Fridays and Bill Gannon’s.
LEOs today are a very, far cry form those of yesteryear.
Public servant? I don’t think they know what that means. Every time I’ve tried calling the cops in the last 20 years they try to make excuses not to do anything. Unless they see an opportunity to make money or beat someone. (And I have police relatives, worked with police, and used to support them without hesitation. They are not your friends.)
That comes from someone whose nephew is a member of a SWAT team
Had a robbery and shooting in my apartment block. Had to call 911 TWICE to get an officer out there. The Asians being robbed were beat up pretty badly. The bullet that the robbers fired at the Asians went through an apartment and lodged in the living room wall. No one cared until another similar robbery took place the following week. This time the robbers gun didn’t miss. Had cops all over the place looking for the bullet to match the gun.
Try making a citizen’s complaint against a cop, I did, and it isn’t pretty what happens to you. They “circle the wagons” and treat you like you are the criminal, right down to the cop at the counter at the PD who threw the complaint form at me when I went in and asked for it. Then they want to “interrogate” you in an “interview room” with no windows and a tape recorder to see if they can trip you up. In my case, they wanted me to go through the whole sequence of events even though I had written it down months earlier in great detail. I basically told them I would answer any specific questions they had, but other than than, I didn’t intend to go over anything. Oh, and one other interesting thing, the complaint form contains on it’s front page, the law concerning filing false complaints. Now how’s that for intimidation!
Customer service, government style. It’s surprising they didn’t audit your taxes just to make sure you were paying your fair share for their services.
Police officers should be trained more carefully to use just the correct amount of force when beating up videographers.
About a dozen years ago, I found out a former girlfriend was working in a high position for OCC, but she didn't respond to my inquiries. At the time I was working for SFPD and I figured she didn't want a conflict of interest for her job. Anyhow, a non-partisan civilian complaint office is a good thing.

Licensed criminals.
Every jurisdiction in the country needs an independent civilian review board that has full subpoena powers, depositions under oath, and the power to issue indictments to take care of situations like this.
The review board should investigate every complaint and every case where deadly force is used whether or not there is a complaint.
