"All bills for raising Revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives." I know I'm reaching here, but isn't raising the debt ceiling an authorization to raise revenue? You raise revenue by issuing bonds, and then you have to raise additional revenue to pay off the bonds. Yeah, it's a stretch, and the idea wouldn't go anywhere, but it doesn't seem so far-fetched to me. If we're going to be ****ed, at least they should do it right.

It would be ideal to starve the beast prior to ‘12—but how? Boehner, McConnell, Cantor et al love this stuff. They sold us down the river. Do we have any recourse other than the ballot box? I wish we did, but barring that it will be nice to see a lot of these corrupt hacks out of a job.

No. "bill for raising revenue" is VERY narrowly construed to mean a bill that directly imposes a tax.

I don't have a handy link, but you might find something by a search on "origination clause." The House is more protective of this than the courts are, and the House didn't have any issue with using a Senate bill to communicate its will.

OMG, they pulled out Gabrielle Giffords to inspire Congress to get over the finish line. Unreal.

This shows how desperate the Dems were to get this passed. And now they will be able to lay the blame at the Republicans' feet for the largest debt-ceiling increase in US history.

Rumors aplenty, but the action on the floor is unanimous consent to skip the normal time delays that attach to a demand to invoke the cloture process. The Senate will vote on it tomorrow.

No, Gabby doesn’t deserve better. She was just another political hack. All Congressional Dems today are either malicious, stupid or both. NO, she did NOT deserve the grievous wounds, but she does deserve to be among her own, those who would use her as a prop. She’d not have objected if it were someone else being used in this way. Bob

I guess we'll never know, right? What would have happened if we brought the One Cent Solution plan to the floor instead of burying it in committee for months? What would have happened after we passed the Ryan plan if we just said, "That's it. That IS our compromise. Deal with it." Or what would have happened if we'd done the same with the CCB plan. Or what would have happened if Boehner hadn't started floating his first plan before the Senate even looked at CCB. Or what would have happened if The Gang Of Sux hadn't thrown a huge obstruction right in front of the first Boehner plan? Or, fergawdsakes, what would have happened if Boehner hadn't had that golf summit with Omoslem?

To paraphrase you, believe in your dreams that this hasn't been a long drawn out piece of political theater. Either that, or as you accused me, you might just be an idiot.

Now go write some thank you letters to Boehner and leave me alone.
