To quote Obama, was it a “Teutonic shift”?
Ha! That’s a good one.
What’s the word for Teutonic shift in Austrian?
But back to substance.
There’s a lot of groaning here at FR today, and understandably.
But it is what it is. I think we have to keep in mind that we didn’t totally lose. No, that is not heartening.
But we didn’t win the Cold War without a lot of major setbacks, either. Nor was it even apparent when Reagan left office that we had in fact won, and all that George Bush had to do was to kick over the carcass.
The welfare state is dying, because we can’t defy gravity much longer. We have to take heart and fight to make sure that something will replace the welfare state when it finishes crashing down.
I think in Cold War terms, we are at about 1985. The stimulus was like the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. The communists have overextended again, and they are going to lose. We just have to keep fighting.
Shifting under our feets?
You would think LOSING Ted Kennedy’s seat and the worst House defeat in 70 years would have been a CLUE to this clueless bunch.
Did he actually say that?
