I think Mom, to run with the metaphor, is the American electorate, who used to shower him with love and affection. Now they're getting impatient that he won't clean up his room, or do his homework, or eat his greens.

Of course, it's her fault that he's spoiled brat, but he's just a snotty kid, doing whatever he can get away with. ;-)
