FWIW, Sly Stone could never, ever pull this off. It's my most favorite EWF tune. No one, before or since could vocalize "
well-" and "
Woman won't cha hear me now", like Maurice White. This may be the best slow dance song ever, because the keys and rhythm guitar are so busy bubbling the funk while the strings and horns soar above the beautiful vocal melodies. There's so much Gospel roots and Roland Bautista's guitar solo is about the most understated masterpiece ever laid on wax (with the possible exception of Steve Lukather on the just played, "Won't Hold You Back") YMMV.
