Back 60 years ago and way back even farther, this was the norm, here, in the USA. That's when kids were still skipped, flunked, and there were even middle schools where the bright kids did thee year in two.

They had Eugenics in the USA. It was the law in many states and only taken off the books a few decades ago though it hadn’t been used since the forties. Hitler was the reason it was stopped...yet he supposedly copied from us.
There were no middle schools 60 years ago.

Over 50 years ago in Queens, NY, my spouse knew of a young man who had been in the same ‘grouping’ of kids from year to year, then was ‘demoted’ to a lower group - don’t know what level of school - sorry.
That young man withdrew and became sullen and inactive. Needless to say he was very affected by the demotion.
Guessing this happened to plenty of kids to one degree or another if/when their status changed - sad.
