2012 Presidential Hopefuls' Immigration Stances
Numbers USA ^ | 07/27/11

...

Why these people? Their appearance here is based on the interest they have shown in potentially running for President, and in the interest that the news media has in them, plus their standing in preference polling. We will be adding other people to – and removing people from – the grid as these levels of interest shift.

Why these categories? The 12 categories on this grid deal with the vast majority of problems with current immigration policies that grant more than 1 million permanent work visas to immigrants each YEAR, and which allow an estimated 7 million jobs in construction, service, manufacturing and transportation to be filled by illegal foreign workers. These policies also drive the majority of additional demands on the physical, social and natural infrastructures of the country, since new immigrants and births to immigrants account for more than three-quarters of the 30 million additional people added to the U.S. population growth each decade. Most of the 12 categories were among the recommendations of the bi-partisan congressional/presidential commission chaired by Barbara Jordan.

Just something to think about.

If there are 30 million illegals in America and a congressional district is made up of a bit over 600,000 people, there are enough illegals in America to completely populate more than 50 congressional districts.

These 4 states are made up of 51 districts.

Frightening isn't it?

One of them (illegals) may become president some day.

I will give Palin a bit of a break on this since her problem is more a lack of a record than a bad record.

Where she goes with it remains to be seen.

“I will give Palin a bit of a break on this since her problem is more a lack of a record than a bad record.”

The people at NumbersUSA rate not only actual votes cast but also public positions. If Palin makes clear, specific public policy position statements on immigration positions, they’ll pick it up. They constantly monitor this and state that a candidate can move up or down in the ratings if the candidate changes positions.

If Palin states she wants a fence across the southern border, cut numbers of immigrants, and force deportation through enforcement of employment laws, she’ll move up.

That is part of it, but there is also that clip where she opposes amnesty but supports a "path to citizenship". They could have considered this a classic case of the kind of double speak that politicians are famous for.

No, she has said that the illegals belong at the back of the immigration bus. (My words)

Here is the section of a transcript of an interview with Bill O'Reilly on the subject:

"PALIN: We’re not going to give them a free pass.

O’REILLY: So you make them register with the federal government.

PALIN: We’re not going to reward the bad behavior.

O’REILLY: And if they don’t register with the — say you gave them 60 days to register with the federal government. There’s a form at the post office they have to send in like a Census form. All right, say they didn’t do it.

PALIN: You deport them.

O’REILLY: OK.

PALIN: You have to get them out.

O’REILLY: So the ones that don’t…

PALIN: We don’t reward their continued bad behavior.

O’REILLY: …after period of time. OK, after a period of time…

PALIN: Yes.

O’REILLY: …the ones that don’t cooperate, you catch them, they’re gone.

PALIN: Right.

O’REILLY: Now, you have these people that register. You’re going to have millions of them. Then they register and they say, OK, we obeyed what President Palin told us to do. Then what? Do you give them green cards to work right away? What do you do with them?

PALIN: You know, there has to be that expectation that they will work and that they will contribute. Bill, it makes me uncomfortable that we’re even going down that path so far…

O’REILLY: You have to though.

PALIN: …when — no, no.

O’REILLY: You have to go down the path because it’s going to come up.

PALIN: American citizens who are here lawfully, they need to be the ones with the first shot at getting these jobs. We cannot make it easy on those who have chosen to be illegally here to disobey our laws. No.

O’REILLY: No, we can’t make it easy, but they’re here. And we can’t starve them to death. And if they can’t work, if they don’t have a green card to work, they’re going to be hosed. I mean, they got to pay rent, they got to buy groceries…

PALIN: Well…

O’REILLY: …this, that and the other thing. So this is where it gets very complicated, governor. You know, it gets very, very complicated…

PALIN: No.

O’REILLY: …because you are rewarding bad behavior. You’re letting them stay in the United States. And they came in illegally.

PALIN: Then let’s keep it — then we won’t complicate it anymore. Let’s keep it simple. And let’s say no, if you are here illegally, and if you don’t follow the steps that at some point through immigration reform we’re going to be able to provide, and that is to somehow allow to you work. If you’re not going to do that, then you will be deported. You will be gone."

Basically, she is arguing that illegals would be deported IF they do not follow the immigration reform process that they would be provided, they will be deported. Those who follow it obviously would not be. In short, she is allowing for them to stay in the U.S. if they follow the immigration reform process provided. One could make an argument that the security requirement of knowing who we have in the U.S. would justify some form of amnesty for those who cooperate with the process and allow themselves to be identified. It could be compared to granting immunity to a criminal whose testimony allows for the conviction of a bigger fish. It would be easier to comes out and say something like that than to engage in verbal gymnastics of claiming to oppose amnesty, but arguing for a process that would allow illegals to stay in the country.

I don’t see it that way. It’s hard to formulate an exact position when there is no “reform” bill to consider. What comes through to me is that there must be basic fairness, with illegals not jumping ahead of legals for any reason.

That is part of it, but there is also that clip where she opposes amnesty but supports a "path to citizenship".

That clip was a deal breaker for me. She even said something like, "Because I understand why they want to be here." Well, I understand why the burglar robbed my house, too. He wanted my stuff! Does that mean he gets a "path to legally being able to keep my stuff"? Palin is going to have to strongly "clarify" that statement before I'd ever consider supporting her.
