Ames Straw Poll Speaking Order Set
The Iowa Republican ^ | 07/27/2011 | Craig Robinson

Sources tell TheIowaRepublican.com that the speaking order for the Ames Straw Poll has been determined. Candidates were able to place their name in a speaking slot based on the amount they paid for their lot on the grounds at the Iowa State Center. That means that Ron Paul had first pick of when he wanted to speak at the event since he paid the most for his space. Paul will speak second, behind Rick Santorum.

Here is the speaking order that was given to TheIowaRepublican.com:

Rick Santorum
Ron Paul
Tim Pawlenty
Michele Bachmann
Thad McCotter
Herman Cain

Quick Thoughts:

Santorum and Pawlenty paid the least for their lots and thus had little control over where they would speak in the program. Ironically, they both landed prime speaking spots. Four years ago, Mitt Romney could pick where he wanted to speak, and chose to lead off the event.

Santorum will be able to set the tone for the afternoon, and not have to worry about being over shadowed by someone speaking before him. The media will be eagerly awaiting the start of the program, so Santorum should get plenty of attention by speaking first. Media attention is something his campaign needs.

The Bachmann campaign must want to be able to respond to Pawlenty, who has become somewhat of a sparring partner for her as of late. The Minnesota showdown in the middle of the program will be something everybody will want to watch.

Herman Cain will be a strong speaker to end the day. He is by far the most gifted speaker who will take the stage in Ames. While closing the event has its appeal, had he chosen to speak in front of a candidate like Pawlenty or Santorum, he may have over shadowed them. Now he needs to hope that the people inside of Hilton Coliseum will stay in their seats after the Pawlenty/Bachmann fireworks display is over.

Sheila Jackson Lee will say the order is racist.

(Well, she would if Cain were a DemocRAT.)

Rick Santorum
Ron Paul

Michele Bachmann
Thad McCotter
Herman Cain

I like that Cain speaks last. Freshest in the memory. I believe Bachmann will win, followed by Cain, Paul and Santorum. No one else matters.

Thad McCotter is likely to overshadow Mrs. Bachmann. Agree with your comment on Cain.

And I agree Mrs. Bachmann will probably win, but it is in her back yard.

Write ins if allowed will be interesting.

Is Ron Paul going to use this forum to introduce his running mate, Cynthia McKinney?

“Thad McCotter is likely to overshadow Mrs. Bachmann.”

That would be interesting. Never heard him.
