Bereaved families criticize Beijing's 'incentive money'

BY ATSUSHI OKUDERA CORRESPONDENT

WENZHOU, China--Attempts by the Chinese government to quickly settle compensation matters with victims of the July 23 train collision on its high-speed railway have triggered another round of criticism from the bereaved families.

An official with the Railways Ministry said July 26 that some bereaved families had agreed to compensation totaling 500,000 yuan (6.25 million yen, or $78,800).

However, because the offer included what was described as "incentive money" to encourage families to reach an early agreement, some families complained that the government was placing too low a priority on investigating the cause of the accident.

At the crematorium, one man, who lost a relative in the train collision, was visibly angry.

It’s a Chi-Comm bullet train. The cause of the accident is the very existance of the train in the first place. The only mystery is why the other trains have not crashed yet.

Sucks to be an egg when The Party decides they want to make a whole bunch of omlettes.

I am sorry to sound crass, but there are morons in this country who hold this Chi-Comm high-speed rail system up as a model to be emulated.

But, we’ll make it “better” and “safer”...just like we’ll make socialist government “smarter” than the rest of the world. They just aren’t as smart as we are! /s

Some claim it will bring thousands, no - millions, no! BILLIONS, no! TRILLIONS of jobs!

China has a vision of a vibrantly capitalist world, but is still trying to use communist/socialist methods to go there. Somebody will almost certainly be shot or hanged in China as a scapegoat for this. But I wonder if the poor schmoe was forced into okaying an inadequate design at the behest of the government. A train design whose risks might be acceptable for moving cargo, may not be safe enough for moving people.

Depends on what breakage rate you find acceptable. I suspect these trains will continue to run. After a little while, a horrific Chinese high-speed train accident will be just another dog-bites-man story.

Don’t meet absurd schedules and quotas you get punished.

If you cheat to do so by cutting corners and building an unsafe schoolhouse, train line, or poison baby formula and get caught in a public way you get punished severely.

It is a fine line those commies have to walk.

On the whole I still prefer it to our system where once you are politically connected failure or success is irrelevant on any level what so ever because the government will bail you out endlessly.
