That was not just a VP candidate, it was VP John Nance Garner - one of the last of the true (not Progressive) conservative democrats, who accepted the VP slot after losing to FDR in the primaries in 1932. After watching FDR, for 8 years, try to pack the Supreme Court, fail to right the economy, start steering us into war, and violate George Washington’s example of a two-term limit as President, Vice president Garner actually ran a primary campaign against FDR in 1940!
