Grocery store chains don’t operate in ghetto areas because of the shoplifting problems. Pure and simple reason.
Simple solution. And it doesn’t cost anything.
Take out the feel good self esteem and the how to use a condom class’s and put back gym.
Economic conditions don’t make a kid fat or thin. You have three types of kids. Kids who play sports, kids who sit at home and do nothing but play video games and kids who are allergic everything under the sun.
All three will eat McDonalds. Two of the three will be fat.
I know a couple who run a grocery in one of the worse areas of Cleveland. They list many issues - shoplifting, costs for security, a narrow range of products are bought (mostly cheap ones, snacks, soda), unreliable employees - they would like to be able to sell out one day, but they know no one would buy their business.

That’s one of the reasons, but not the only reason.
Modern supermarket are huge, and the volume they require to be profitable means that they have to draw from a wide geographic area, which in most places means from outside the ghetto.
People who live outside the hood just won’t go there, particularly in the evening hours, with money to shop.
My thoughts also.
Who wants to put up with mobs stealing fresh vega....wait a minute...the
only thing they wouldn’t steal, so they must want money to divert someplace else.

I’ve wondered if a different model of store would work in urban areas. I’ve long been wondering if this is the grocery store of the future.
The building would be a fully enclosed warehouse, where no people other than workers were allowed in the back where the food is. It has a front desk or desks.
You phone your order in, it’s picked in the back by workers, and brought out to you at the desk (you could schedule a pickup time).
You look it over to make sure it matches what you ordered and that it’s ok, pay for it, and leave with it.
No shoplifting is possible - the only loss would be worker theft and that’s more easily controlled.
The store doesn’t have to have fancy presentation, lighting, etc. You need less people to handle the food, it’s picked once, not displayed, moved into the cart, out of the cart, into the bag, etc.
In really bad areas the front desk areas could be behind glass like at bank windows.
I’ll bet they don’t shoplift “healthy” foods either.
