....I can't talk specifics about my time at the IRS, but here are some generalities. Those claiming EITC also qualify for other so-called refundable credits (how can something be refundable when nothing is paid in the first place?). The typical 1040 would show an income of between $12,000 to $18,000 for the year. It was usually accompanied by one W-2 with the income earned almost always by a female. With other refundable credits listed, a "refund" would be claimed of between $6,000 and $9,000.
And these people believe that is their money; they have a right to it. I fielded a telephone query from a woman who didn't even say hello, but blurted, "I haven't got my taxes." For an instant I thought she meant that she didn't have enough money to pay her taxes, but I quickly realized she was talking about her "refund." We newbies learned that those who pay taxes have a general fear of calling the IRS and tend to be nice on the telephone, while those who don't pay any taxes believe they are entitled and are not always pleasant to deal with. We also learned these aren't the brightest people on the planet with many signing their refund over to a tax-preparer and then claiming they didn't know they had done that. (The "instant refund" scam perpetrated by many storefront tax-preparers is a whole other story.)
...A golfing buddy said his girlfriend's daughter claims EITC among other things and received a U.S. government check for $6,000. She used the money to take her toddler daughter and the child's ne'er-do-well father to the Monterey Bay Aquarium -- a couple hundred bucks -- and spent the remainder for a giant tattoo on her back. There are some who would say that if you tried to get rid of this, you would be raising taxes, and therefore violating the anti-tax pledge, and would be a RINO.
It’s part of the complexity of discussing taxes, when tax policy is as much about spending money to pay people to do government’s bidding, or to pay them off for voting democrat, as it is about fairly taxing the earnings of people to pay for the government.
I’d say at least half the tax code deductions and credits should really be treated as expenditures, including part of the mortgage interest deduction, but agreement on these lists often depends on which deductions and credits a person is getting.
And again, I would like to thank all you other taxpayers for helping me to buy two Prius automobiles, and to replace my old Air Conditioning Unit. Oh, and for helping me put my daughter through college this year. Yes, I happen to pay more in taxes each year than the combined total of all these credits, but if nobody got the credits, ALL the taxpayers could have gotten a slightly smaller bill.

Three years ago, my wife and I got custody of two of our grand children from Missouri. This was an interstate foster care type agreement with the Mo. court, no care payments involved from either state because we told the judge that we could provide for our own g/kids. We found ourselves in the position of having to “argue” with a judge, to NOT take any (Missouri) state money, we eventually prevailed and he commended us for our stand.
The “foster” part of the arrangement was to be temporary while we were being investigated for approval by Illinois legal guardianship, at which time we would be granted legal guardianship. This process took from May of one year until Jan. the following year. In that period, I could not add them to my insurance until we got legal permanent guardianship of them (A requirement of my insurer)
So far, so good but the judge told us that they would have to stay on medicaid until they were covered by my insurance. I argued, if you will, that my wife and I would pay all their medical needs in the interim and were financially able to do so and I had financial records with me to prove the point.
We did not prevail on that issue, the judge ordered that they stay on medicaid, until we had that legal guardianship.
On being approved by Illinois, we ran into yet another road block, the case worker assigned to us insisted that we receive pymts. from Illinois foster care, we insisted that we neither needed or wanted it. We did manage to prevail on that point.
Next, we enrolled them in school, both 3rd. graders at the time and one of the questions we were required to answer was, insurers name. We told the lady medicaid and immediately she told us that they would get “free” lunches and breakfasts automatically. We told her that we were perfectly able to feed our own g/children and at last we had run into a conservative thinker.
She didn’t argue about it and commended us for it - commendation for doing what to us, was simply the right thing to do. She was required by law to tell us about the “freebies”. My wife and I had a nice conversation with her and as I stated, she was a conservative minded person. She told us “in confidence” that between 45%-50% of all the students at the school, got “free” lunch and breakfast. I was astounded, we do not live in a poor area at all.
We have legal guardianship of the children and are in the adoption process now, so far we have spent $3,000 lawyers and court fees and expect to spend quite a bit more before it’s over. There is an adoption tax credit available unless the liberals rescind it and I do plan to take that.
He was arrested for burning down their house (says he didn't do it, but me thinks thou (they) protestets to much)
When they got the tax check, their case was also beginning. But couldn't afford a lawyer, so went with a public defender. Of course their defender was "in cahoots with the police" and "they never had a chance" and took a plea bargain.
One interesting point is, at no point did my cousins husband ever look for a part time job to make extra money to pay for a lawyer. Never did my cousin herself, ever look for a job, to pay for a good lawyer to keep her husband out of jail.
My cousins husband requires blood pressure meds, and the jail requires them to obtain them through their sources, versus them buying them and bringing them in. Which is a lot more expensive. My cousin hasn't looked for a job in order to pay for these meds. Her 23 yr old daughter has only had a job about 9 months her entire life, and hasn't had one in 2 years. Her almost 20 yr old, just graduated HS last year, and has a part time job. Neither one can afford to buy dads meds. But they each both went and got a small tatoo last week.
My cousins husbands last payroll check just came, and she had to buy her 23 year old daughter, cigarettes and minutes for her cell phone.
Now my cousin and her husband want to claim bankruptcy so they don't have to pay any of their debts or 35k restitution for the house.
Since restitution is court mandated, I expect when my cousins husband gets out, he won't be able to "find" a job, and go on full welfare and food stamps.

Oh I forgot. They took some of their tax money and bought ANOTHER computer (with a touch screen) for $900.
Oh yeah, they don't have any money for their property taxes.

But if the IRS determines it's was a 'fraudulent claim' instead of 'just Reckless', they can't file a phony EITC for ten years. And after that - they can start filing 'fraudulent claims' -- AGAIN!

Sadly, I’m the partner in Hubby’s business (poor fella!) and, since he works between 80-100 hours a week, in my off hours I’m the CEO of child-rearing, yard-mowing, meal-fixing, gutter-cleaning, errand-running, paper-working, roof-painting and everything else he doesn’t have time to tackle. Lol!
She’s absolutely correct. $150 jeans and the latest, greatest cell phone but still standing in line for their free school lunch!
Half-price shopping is the favorite way to turn food stamp cards into cash in this area. We have a niece on my wife’s side who sold groceries bought with her “EBT” card for half price to raise the money to take her daughter to a Kenny Chesney concert! I would want to be paid a healthy amount to go and endure a Kenny Chesney concert. There are huge numbers of people selling half priced groceries around here, I have been told that at least in one town they are cold calling, knocking on doors to offer to go grocery shopping with anyone who will pay fifty dollars for a hundred dollars worth of food that the taxpayers are paying for, supposedly to feed hungry children but in reality to pay for concerts, tattoos, whatever, anything but food.
Don’t ask me what they eat after giving away their free groceries, I don’t know.

They hit up the local churches and food pantries and take the food that struggling families really need. All while giving their sob story about how their food stamps just don’t go far enough. Odd how none of them look emaciated...

Yes, it is, but it’s served as a real life lesson on socialism in action for my kids. Taking charity work away from the churches and communities and handing it over to the government is really working out well, isn’t it? :/
I know a guy that has 4 kids with his baby mama. They live together, but are constantly on the move. The get kicked out of a place at least once a year. Last year he got back about $6K in a refund....with very little work on the books. He went out to the casino, and won 10K with it. He came home, bought a new tv, new stereo, two computers, Wii, PS3 AND Xbox. New furniture, and bikes for the kids. In one month, he was asking me to borrow money. I worked him sometimes in my business, but never have done it since. Thursday last, I called him and asked if he wanted to work a few days. He told me that he was busy, it seems he started his own paint company, and had jobs to do. The kicker is, after telling me no thanks, he called me back 3 hours later. He asked if I had any boxes, when he had gotten home from “work”, there was a three day eviction notice on his door. His wife is a convicted felon. She plead guilty of embezzling a restaurants weekly receipts, but both of them are receiving rent support, help with power and phone bills, food stamps, financial aid....the whole shebang. I on the other hand, pay taxes quarterly, last year received nearly $200 back in an overpayment, and am the sole support of myself and wife. Of course I am angry at these stories.

As you should be! As a society, we’re losing that anger and sense of injustice. Most greet these stories with a shrug of their shoulders and a “meh” attitude.
A guy here is a lifelong loser... drunk, meth head, deadbeat dad, the whole bit. He was finally sent to jail after a standoff with the police and numerous other criminal activities. I’d see him around and ask if he was out only to be told he was still in jail. Finally found out they let him out of jail a certain number of days each month so he doesn’t lose his DISABILITY payments.
It’s past time for those of us working our tails off and being responsible to get angry over how OUR money is being spent.

I'm a loss for words when I read these stories. There is so much fraud that must be fixed within these opiates for the masses programs it's astounding.
