The sad truth for ridiculous Web memes is that they have remarkably poor shelf lives. So, farewell planking.
Hello, owling.
Deciding that striking a "light as a feather, stiff as a board" pose in public, photographing it and posting it on the Web is old news, some Internet denizens have moved on.
Now, it's all about squatting, arms pressed toward the ground and eyes locked in a wise, faraway gaze. You know ... like an owl.
If it all seems sort of ludicrous, well, that's kind of the point.
"Owling is actually more of an indication of how big planking is," said Ben Huh, founder of the Cheezburger Network of sites and blogs, which focus largely on Internet humor and memes.
"Planking is kind of like the Rebecca Black of Internet memes," he said, referring to the "Friday" pop singer. "So many people think it's so stupid -- but they're watching it and they're parodying it."
According to the network's Know Your Meme blog, owling was first documented July 11 in a post on Web-sharing site Reddit. It featured a "demotivational"-style poster of a woman "owling" with the text: "Owling: Because Planking Is So Two Months Ago."
"Owling is what we call a 'forced meme,' " Huh said. "It's the idea that we're going to try to make something happen in reaction to something else."
Planking, at times called the Lying Down Game, became popular in the United Kingdom last year and picked up popularity worldwide this spring. (Tragically, much of the attention came after May 15, when a 20-year-old Australian man died attempting the stunt on a seven-story building.)

But planking is good for the building core strength....Oh never mind.
Just another fad the kiddies are up to. No big thing I guess....
Planking? Owling? PULEEZE! Amateurs. Who's up for Captain Morgan? |
If you want off my ping list get over it!
Now go out and parade around before your neighbors.
These people, if they can be clasified as such, should be locked up and never allowed out in public.
I think I’d look purdy good strutin’ my stuff out thar. I think I could get myself a great following of fellow lampers. One of the good things about this new hobby is that it protects your identity so you don’t have to worry about getting fired if your boss sees it!
People were doing that in the 1950s???? Time to bring back some tradition!
Thank you Jack. Sometimes a post is just over my head too.
Oh, wait, yes, I believe lamping HAS caught on already! Already 50 million social network hits! But wait, its popularity is now taking a dive. What's next? Obamaing!
Now we need an entire thread of lamping guy photoshopped into different places like tourist & looter guy LOL.
He could become the next FR icon!
What? Cow tipping isn’t “in”, any more?
This could be bigger and better than AYBABTU!
I say we "Go For It"!
WE can have FR "Lamping Contests" and vote on the most outstanding "Lamper"!
Lets Do It!
Sounds good to me. We need more light in this world and the best way to start out doing this is with lamping by FReepers. Submit your best photo now!
